2002 Domaine du Theron Cahors
(2010-02-16 01:58:13 UTC)The red cherry and pepper on the nose raised my expectations but this mostly Malbec blend had an austere, somewhat flat palate with bitter tannins, subdued berry fruit, tobacco and a quick, thin finish. This particular bottle may not have aged well.
2005 Sumac Ridge Steller's Jay Brut
(2010-02-16 00:47:01 UTC)We tipped a glass or two of this Canadian sparkler from B.C. in honour of the Olympics. The Steller's Jay is clean, crisp and medium-bodied with big notes of apple, pear and Okanagan orchard blossoms and a quick, acidic finish. This would pair very well with shellfish. A silver medal winner, for sure.
2003 Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva
(2010-02-07 21:56:59 UTC)I found this Sangiovese a few years ago and now wish I'd bought a couple more bottles. Deep ruby red with dark berry on the nose, the main impression is of concentrated cherry fruit on a rich, silky palate with earthy notes of herb and spice underneath. The wine is medium-bodied with balanced tannins that resolve into a somewhat acidic finish emphasizing the tart quality of the fruit. Real good.
Lucky you. I've not much luck letting my Morellino's sit for more than a year or 2.
Thanks! - I'm going to put that Cuvee Theo on my to-taste list...
2004 Clos du Bois North Coast Zinfandel
(2010-01-30 14:54:23 UTC)Delivers much of what you'd expect in a Californiz zin, only less. Plum, berry & slightly smoky vanilla aromas/flavours are the dominant notes. On the palate this wine is smooth and medium-bodied. Overall, it comes across as a lighter expression of the varietal - a 2% zin.
When I'm BBQing chicken and pork at the same time and I want ONE wine to go with both I choose this stuff and wines just like it. The 2000 was my first and I've been stuck ever since.
2006 Sordo Dolcetto D'Alba
(2010-01-26 04:57:50 UTC)Like the previous reviewer, I found this light-medium bodied Dolcetto a little tight: the nose offered some cherry & a bit of licorice; on the palate the main sensation is sour cherry. Taciturn & acidic.
2005 Torres Coronas Tempranillo
(2010-01-24 00:29:29 UTC)Black cherries and vanilla on the nose; berry fruit, vanilla and some earthy notes on the palate. Medium bodied with soft tannins. An easy-drinking bistro-style wine to pair up with pizza or grilled meat.
2006 Jacob's Creek Reserve Shiraz
(2010-01-17 01:42:37 UTC)At 18 bucks (Cdn), this wine really delivers. The big blue/blackberry aromas and underlying pepper had me thinking fruit bomb, but this shiraz is elegant and silky with pure fruit flavour grounded in spice and mocha. Really balanced, really tasty and a really good time all by itself.
Have heard good things about this wine. Definitely going to pick up a bottle!
2007 Wakefield Promised Land Riesling
(2010-01-12 16:04:04 UTC)This Aussie riesling offers a nose full of citrus and floral notes, loads of lemon and lime on the palate and a crisp acidic finish to balance the sweet fruit. Nice.
