Message Reviews Cellar Shopping List
I've been enjoying wine for years but only started to take it seriously in the last year or two. I'm starting with exceedingly affordable wines; let's see what we can find that's both good and cheap! If you look hard, there's almost always something interesting out there.

2007 Quattro Mani Toh-Kai
(2010-03-08 07:56:19 UTC)Nose is rich on the slate and menthol and citrus, but give it time and it evens out into honey. This has a flavor I've never really encountered before; starting with slate, running through a citrus of some type, then finishing with tons of slate and astringency.... but not insultingly. There's a hint of sweetness, maybe apple, throughout. Very drinkable and excellent with food.
2005 Maloy O'Neill Gioi
(2010-02-22 00:18:52 UTC)Plum and chocolate!
2008 McManis Petite Sirah
(2010-01-04 01:45:32 UTC)Nose of raspberry and chocolate, without being cloying. Black cherries and vanilla, with a hint of oakiness in the background. Probably would open further, but it was delicious and I was impatient to finish.
This description is pretty darn accurate from my experience.
2006 Justin Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
(2009-12-26 22:35:38 UTC)Well worth letting breathe; even after an hour decanting, still opened further. The nose started out full of oak and vanilla, but that grew into leather as time passed. The wine tasted of cassis and oak, with a stony undertone that turned to smoke over time, and tannins evolving to pepper. Even the mouth feel changed, from rustic and grainy to a little more oily (we didn't filter it). Truly a stand-out wine. When we bought it after a tasting at the Justin vineyards, it seemed about 80% as good as the Isoceles, for 15% the price; drinking it a year later bore that impression out.
2007 Domaine Des Escaravailles Cotes du Rhone Les Antimagnes
(2009-12-22 06:38:14 UTC)Lots of acacia, along with red raspberry, on the nose, with red fruits and mild tannins on the palate. Not at all spicy or harsh.
2005 Foxen Sangiovese Williamson-Doré Vineyard
(2009-12-15 06:27:43 UTC)Cassis with a hint of pepper on the nose, a very rich introduction to the wine. Backed up by the taste -- tons of red fruit, but light, with just a hint of oak underneath. Maybe a hint of cranberry or gooseberry as well? Certainly refreshing, but a mildly buttery mouth feel.
2005 Foxen Syrah Tinaquiac Vineyard
(2009-12-10 05:24:47 UTC)Drank this one a little earlier than we probably should have -- ahh greed. Let it open for an hour or so, then it's smooth and delicious. Too busy drinking it to take proper notes, sorry.
