To think it's nearly been a year since I joined, how time flies, yet some things stay the same.
2005 Finest Steillage Riesling
(2007-12-09 19:37:40 UTC)Petrol and lime on the nose, a lovely minerality with citrus undertones. Good mouthfeel, thick but not sweet, there's good dryness in this relatively young Riesling and that citrus flavour has a long finish, this is a good drinking wine, 86-87pts.
2005 Georgian Valleys Alaznis Valley White
(2007-12-09 19:35:35 UTC)Lovely golden colour, with an unusual nose, slightly floral, a hint of burnt caramel, but also something else, slightly sweet but also a touch musty (but not unpleasant). Quite light in the mouth, a definitely honeyed feel to it, residual sugar coming through. The finish is fast, too quick really, since this is much more enjoyable than I tought it would be. I'm not a big semi-sweet white wine drinker, but this was good, and amazing QPR (but I don't plan going back to Lithuania to get some more!). 85-86pts.
NV La Gitana
(2007-12-09 19:33:13 UTC)Colour, pale straw, much paler than I was expecting, and weak legs for a 15%, but what a nose! Bitter, burnt aromas, slightly chemically but also some vanilla and butter in the background. Very light in the mouth (is this really 15% abv?) but smooth as well, and then the dryness kicks in, coating on the top of the palate and a decent length. There a real bitter saltiness to this drink, but served chilled is very refreshing and, for my first Manzanilla, not bad. 87-88pts.
2003 Heimbourg Riesling
(2007-12-09 19:32:01 UTC)A honeyed nose with a good dose of waxy petrol. Rich in the mouth, a little zestiness, some more of that honey and a nice oily mineralilty. This is an elegant wine, not flashy or overpowering in any aspect, but good in all it does. 89-90pts.
2005 Extra Special Primitivo di Puglia
(2007-12-09 19:30:57 UTC)Vegetal, green & spicy nose, there's a bit of farmyard in here as well, but welcome. Dry and fruity, and then a bit more dry, sour cherries on the finish and tannins all around the mouth. This wine has a rustic style but it's one I appreciate. I may be scoring this high, especially after a glass of Sutter Home preceded it, but I'm going 84-85pts and a good QPR.
