As so many others here I got really hooked by Gary and wltv. I prepared for a 3 weeks trip to Bordeaux, bought the wine atlas by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson and had a look at wltv. Wine has been a myth for me before. Like inherent knowledge some gifted people have. So I went very serious testing Chateau's in Medoc and Pouillac. I learned a lot on wine and things hapening on your palate while drinking it. So here I am, building up a stock of tremendous (and not so tremendous) wines and hoping to find new suggestions for different wines. As I live in Germany old world is short at hand with the best Riesling amongst other great grapes. Not mentioning Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and so on. So lets change the wine world!

2006 Heger oktav Weissburgunder
(2008-07-06 19:27:38 UTC)Very nice pinot blanc with minerals, honey, granny smith and white berries. Fresh and fruity as well as little oily but not as much as to be mistaken for a Riesling. Heger is a good name for German pinot blanc.
1996 La Dame de Montrose
(2008-07-06 19:23:24 UTC)This wine is little past its drinking age. I think one year ago it would have been best. Now there is a still big Bordeaux left with very much tastes and smells of vegetables. Very smooth but a little lack in the mid palate. The balance between black grapes and berries as well as leather and herbal tastes (sage) and smells was little out of balance. Not my cup of tea.
2006 2005 Gagliardo Dolcetto D'alba
(2008-07-06 19:13:20 UTC)This really was awkward. Nose had a hint of, well, dusty contaminated soil? Taste was with no mid-palate and finish. In the beginning fruity but with heat and something I can not name but bad. However, I can not assume this wine somehow was wrong but it was what it was. The worst Dolcetto I had. Small effort. I confess I bought it by label. Bad choice.
2004 Ambra Vigne Alte Montalbiolo Riserva
(2008-07-06 19:02:42 UTC)This wine really is exceptional. I am no expert in Italian wine. Wine from Italy was usually "Pizza Wine". This little fellow developed during two day in the nose from totaly oaky to fruity to ultimativly complex with leather, tabaco chocolate, barn, vegetable. Taste was defenitely on the vegetable side with black current and dark sweet cherry combined. Pickles, celery, peppers - all that stuff. This wine is as complex as the best Bordeaux I drank.
I would highly recomend this wine!
2005 Pescaja Soliter Barbera d'Asti
(2008-07-06 18:48:16 UTC)Colour: dark red with little brownish rim on the edge. I would think this wine is ready to drink.
Nose: A blast. Fruity and little oaky. Black current. Black pepper. Too much heat.
Palate: Well, good solid. Brings much heat. But still developing. Smooth in the start, very fruity in the mid palate and little tanic in the finish. Keeps its taste very long.
I poped it right as it was. Joined it with pasta and truffles, maybe not the perfect pair. However a good solid drinkable wine. Still developing. As I expect it to give much more pleasure tomorrow I give a 88 score.
2004 Domaine de Montcalmes
(2008-04-13 16:27:52 UTC)Well, tried this during easter holidays. cork'd was down, so i forgot most testing notes. However I recall being very impressed. Very smooth and on the vegetable side. developed nicely over three days and was little to tanic at the end which led me to the assumption that it easyly could have used two more years in the cellar.
Try this with meat and with fisch, it will match as well as a nice football game.
2003 Castell de les pinyeres Crianza
(2008-01-30 20:54:15 UTC)Well, what can I say. I open wine and drink it throughout 3 days usualy. I am the only winedrinker here. So the dealer told me 93 points RP. I said: yeah, shure for 9 Euros, stupid?
Stupid me. First night: intense crianza with lots of fruit, leather, tabaco, something I don't know. Good but nothing spezial. Next night: oh boy, things develop, much mor fruit and leather and still something I recognize, nice but I can't nail down. Tonight (bottle finished): It was bacon fat! You smell this and you think of a delicious breakfast with bacon, sunny day and currant jam.
RP was right, not Bordeaux but this rocks. I give it 93 points and if you can get it, buy it.
2005 Chateau Siaurac Lalande de Pomerol
(2008-01-22 18:56:02 UTC)To be honest: I tried ths wine because it was semi expensive and I wanted to see if 2005 Bordeaux is worth the hype. It is as far I can tell from this sample. It is far too young but has heavy potential to ripe in the cellar. Loads of tannins, acidity and fruit. Allready you get the little hint of almond and black currant which should develop in next, lets say, 15 years. However it left me little dissapointed in the mid palate. I don't know what GV would make out of it but it concerns me that much I am not sure yet to buy a case for the cellar. But as GV says: 2005 is also a big vintage for - lets say - avarage Bordeaux. Although I can hear the screaming allready that Chateau Siaurac is not to call avarage....
2000 Chateau de Rouillac Pessac-Léognan
(2008-01-15 20:46:06 UTC)Well, maybe you know this: there is a 2000 wine in your cellar. A brief calculation tells you that after 8 years it should be ok to open it. The cork pops, first nose as you unscrew the cork and you think "oh no! bad mistake, ten more years!" But, well, shit happens and you end up drinking it anyway.
Color:
this is dark, dark red, no fingers, nothing.
Nose:
first nose: oak. Nothing else. Second day: do you know this old english guys? They sit in their castle with tweed on, smoke ciggars, and drink single malt. Rooms are dark with carpets and heavy wooden furniture. Occasionaly a pheasant is lying near his hunting rifle. Then comes in the maiden. She carries a basket with fresh berrys and a new package of coffee, fresh roast from the market. Then she goes down into the sellar to put the pheasant on the wall to bleed it. This is what it smells like. All of this, even the moisty carpets. But hell, it is still so fresh...
Palate:
Tanins. Strong tanins. Blueberries and blackberries in a steel bowl. Tabaco, chocolate (the bitter black one) and herbs, lots of them.
I really could get me a slap, 10 more years and this wine would have been perfect! You know the worst thing? It was the last one to buy at the Chateau! Damn.
2005 Catena Malbec
(2007-11-22 21:22:57 UTC)My first Malbec - so lets go!
Nose:
Rich, smokey, raspberry, strong blueberry, cherry. Leather and oak. Cream candy. Vanilla and ... beond all, beat me but its there: cowshed. I hope it comes from the oak and not from argentinian cattle!
Clour:
Dark, distinct rubin red. Tending to blueish.
Pallate:
Well this is interesting! As I sipp it and the first drops touch the tounge it is so rich and voluminous cherry like I feel like teasting jam! Then fruit flush, full and rich. Silky mid palate strong with cherry and blueberry. Fine heat and pepper mixed with blueberry peel. The blueberry peel stays in the finish for long along with a fine taste of chocolte - but just a hint.
Well it is very fruity and well made. However finish is a little disjointed, although it still developes and stays long. It is very "sweet" to me. I think its the new world thing.
