I'm really a beer geek, but I dabble in wine occasionally. Tasting really good Belgian, German, and American microbrewed beer lead me first to scotch, and then to wine. To read some of my beer tasting notes, go to beeradvocate.com and look up my username "pmcadamis" My first love will always be beer, but I'm really starting to develop a taste for the fruit of the vine and I'm learning a lot from watching Gary on winelibrary tv! Oh, and I've recently been home-brewing mead..... which is essentially wine made from honey.

2006 Black Swan Chardonnay
(2009-09-08 04:31:44 UTC)Buttered popcorn on the nose. Lemon butter, capers, and margarine flavors with a creamy almond finish. This is really super-buttery, but I enjoy that flavor very much. Could be perceived as a "cheap-n-easy" flavor in a chard, but whatever..... I like it! Cashew and almond along with some alcohol warmth at the finish.
2006 Black Swan Shiraz
(2009-08-30 20:28:59 UTC)Meaty and full bodied. Chewy. Big time fruit bomb, but juicy and ripe fruit.... not bright acidic fruit. Black cherry, blackberry, and peppercorn studded steak. An excellent wine for the money (cheap!).
2007 Black Swan Merlot
(2009-08-24 17:29:56 UTC)Sugary blackberry jam and grape jelly nose with some cinnamon. Tart at first, then becoming much more sweet culminating in a sugary super-fruity finish. Not much structure, and there is a sourness that is way out of place. One step above Boon's Farm "wine."
2002 Merlot X-A
(2009-08-04 05:40:30 UTC)Rich and warm sugarplum notes with hints of cinnamon. Deeply aromatic and earthy: like hippie incense that immediately takes you down a rung on the consciousness ladder. Smells the way a spa's meditation room would smell. Tart and very acidic, with some rubbery and smoky notes that I really like. This one has massive tannin structure, but it comes of as a bit medicinal and plastic-y. My wife hated this one, but I really like it..... especially for the cheapo price! It smells A LOT better than it tastes, however.
2005 Crane Lake 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
(2009-06-26 04:38:56 UTC)This smells like tart strawberry jam and super-sugary grape jelly..... where's the toast? Seriously, this is a very candied nose with hints of what reminds me of those little strawberry hard-candies that come wrapped in a little foil wrapper that looks like a real strawberry. Very, very sweet on the palate..... uncharacteristic for the style (although it does finish on the dry side). This is jammy gooey sugar, not the austere, powerful, and dry juggernaut that cabernet should be. Not bad for summer sipping, but this is not a serious wine..... its more like Boone's Farm. In fact on this warm evening I think I will have another glass.... this time on ice.
2005 Crane Lake California Merlot
(2009-06-23 17:34:10 UTC)Spiced plum and black cherries on the nose, with a hint of cinnamon. Nice tannin structure tempered with juicy fruit flavors.... primarily slightly under-ripe tangy plum and big time juicy cherry. The finish is dry, and that helps balance out the fruit a little bit. This is pretty nice wine for the bargain basement price. Nothing fancy, but a great "everyday" wine for those of us who aren't big-time ballers.
2007 Sutter Home Moscato
(2009-06-10 05:45:51 UTC)This super sweet wine is graced with a hint of lemon-lime that keeps it out of the "cloying" category, but only just. The aroma is very floral and sweet, like girly shampoo. Uncomplicated, one dimensional (sugar!), and boring. Seems like bimbo blonde wine to me. Keep the sugars high and the airheads think that they are enjoying good wine. I really don't mean to be sexist, its just a very sugary gooey wine, and my first thought is that "my wife will probably love this."
2005 Santa Alicia Reserve Shiraz
(2009-01-16 01:31:50 UTC)Deep crimson in the glass, this one is redolent of big red roses and complex fruit. Smells like old lady perfume, but I don't mean that in a bad way. The flavor is nice and meaty, and extremely solid in both the tannin and oak departments...... this is a big wine to pair with steak, sausage, or other meaty dishes that require a big bodied powerful glass of wine. My wife thought is was a bit too dry, but I like it a lot!
2007 Folie a Deux Menage a Trois Red
(2008-12-21 14:37:58 UTC)Cherry, oak, and almonds on the nose. Sweet and round flavors full of cherry and raspberry preserves, and nice woody and nutty undertones. Medium bodied with a nice off dry finish that is relatively light in tannins. Easygoing and drinkable. GOod stuff to keep around the house.
2006 Jacob's Creek Shiraz 2006
(2008-12-11 05:34:31 UTC)Concord grape juice with a hint of pepper. Some tannins are there, along with some alcohol burn, but this is not a big bodied Shiraz by any stretch of the imagination. A bit of red wine vinegar flavor throws this one off a bit.
