2007 Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel
(2009-01-24 21:27:58 UTC)From vines that are 100+ years old and aged in oak barrels, this is a good quality wine. There is some complexity going on here, you could spend a while with this one swirling and sipping and getting something new each time. Or just enjoy it thoughtlessly with a big steak or a rack of lamb.
Appearance: deep purple.
Nose: pronounced intensity, complex, ripe dark fruit, especially raspberry, mint, sweet spices such as clove.
Palate: Dry, medium+ acidity, high tannin, full bodied. Tasting notes of dark fruit, spice, leather, and mocha.
Length: long on the finish.
2007 Wally's Hut Shiraz
(2009-01-24 21:19:02 UTC)This wine comes from South Eastern Australia, which compromises 90% of the continent. The grapes could be from anywhere and the wine shows no distinctive characteristics of a region or the grape variety. That said, it is a fairly tasty wine for $10. It has oak characteristics, which likely come from oak chips being added to the wine (can't do oak barrels for that price). A solid choice for burgers on a weeknight or a neighbourhood BBQ.
Appearance: deep ruby.
Nose: medium+ intensity, dark fruit: blackberry and plum. Toasty oak and sweet vanilla.
Palate: Dry, medium+ acidity, medium tannin, medium+ body. Tasting notes of sweet, ripe fruit, a peppery spice, sweet vanilla, coconut and marshmallow.
Length: a medium finish.
2006 Mommessin Beaujolais AOC
(2009-01-24 21:09:44 UTC)A lunchtime or picnic wine! Try it with salmon, light intensity meats, cold cuts, mild cheeses and bread. Wines from Beaujolais are always made with the Gamay grape. This one went through carbonic maceration -- a winemaking technique to extract colour without tannin. It also brings out the playful, candied smell and taste in the fruits.
Appearance: medium intensity with a ruby hue.
Nose: medium intensity, candied strawberry and red cherry, some spice.
Palate: Dry, medium+ acidity, medium- soft tannins, light body. Tasting notes of sour cherry, red fruit and spice.
Length: short on the finish.
2007 Marqués de Cáceres Rosado
(2009-01-24 20:58:18 UTC)A good rosé wine to keep in mind if you want to go on a Spanish-themed picnic with some jamón (dry-cured Spanish ham) or paella (saffron flavoured rice with meat, shellfish, onion, peppers, etc). It has fairly high alcohol at 13.5% and muted flavours. It's best served well chilled.
Appearance: pale+ intense pink.
Nose: Medium- intensity or strawberries, raspberries, red fruit and some floral rosy notes.
Palate: Dry, medium acidity, no to low tannins, medium body. Tasting notes of light red fruit, like an unripe strawberry with the green top.
Length: medium and bitter on the finish.
2006 Château Gaudrelle Vouvray AOC
(2009-01-24 20:45:31 UTC)This is a wine that would be worth checking out again, as it is well balanced for a fair price.
Appearance: pale lemon.
Nose: medium intensity, ripe red apple, pear, mineral, and perhaps a little sulfur.
Palate: Dry, medium+ acidity, round/heavy/rich medium- body, tasting notes of apple, pear, and mineral.
Length: Medium+ on the finish.
2007 Cuvee du Haut-Cency Muscadet Sevre et Maine
(2009-01-24 20:26:36 UTC)Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is the appellation known for making the best wine from the Muscadet grape. This wine is prepared "sur lie" which means the wine is kept in contact with the lees (dead yeast cells) to increase the flavour of the grape that is known to be very light. As it is a simple, dry, light bodied, acidic white wine with citrus notes, Muscadet is a perfect accompaniment to oysters or mussels in white wine sauce.
Appearance: Clear, pale straw or lemon tone.
Nose: A light+ intensity of citrus and mineral.
Palate: Dry, high acidity, light body, with lemon, citrus, green apple and mineral tasting notes.
Length: Medium on the finish.
2007 Clos de los Siete Red Blend
(2009-01-19 06:07:26 UTC)With a big nose of dark fruit, a full body and fairly long finish, this was hitting all the right notes with me. Gimme a big, fat pepper steak with this one!
Appearance: Deep intensity, purple.
Nose: Pronounced, dark fruit: blackberry, black cherry, dark plum. Sweet spice: cinnamon, clove. Oak: toasty, vanilla, chocolate.
Palate: Dry, medium+ acidity, high tannin, full body. Dark fruit and vanilla, chocolate.
Length: Medium+ to long on the finish.
2007 Bolla Valpolicella
(2009-01-19 05:54:52 UTC)A classic Valpolicella: an easy, light to pair with tomato-based pasta.
Appearance: Light+ intensity, pale-, ruby red.
Nose: Light+ intensity; red fruit: raspberry, cherry, red currant, cranberry, sour cherry; herby leaves, mineral, white pepper, and earth.
Palate: Dry, high acidity, low tannins, light body. Earthy, sour cherry taste. A low intensity, simple flavour.
Length: Short+ on the finish.
2006 Errazuriz Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc
(2009-01-19 05:43:14 UTC)Mmmm, I love dessert wine! Try this tropical sweetie with fresh fruit and cream.
Appearance: Medium intensity, golden.
Nose: Almost pronouned intensity. Honey, lemon, dried apricot, lychee, melon. Sweet and tropical.
Palate: Sweet, high acidity, body is medium+. Characters of honey, tropical 5-Alive.
Length: Medium+ on the finish.
