2007 Luzon Jumilla
(2009-10-18 23:17:01 UTC)Bold, powerful, forward. At 14% alcohol, something not to be trifled with. Specific flavors of mint and tobacco, making the last glass you have a perfect mix with a similarly flavored cigar. Excellent value at under 10 dollars.
2007 Bodegas Ateca Calatayud Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines
(2009-09-28 19:39:44 UTC)No significant changes from the previous two vintages and that's a good thing. Same encompassing mouth-feel, same fruit-forward cherry and plum, same almost unnatural dark red hue. White pepper slightly more pronounced in this vintage.
Again, pair with grilled meats, meat-based pasta dishes, or even a sausage pizza if you're just laying around the house. At 10 dollars--and 14 percent alcohol content--its a house staple can be enjoyed frequently.
2006 Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines
(2009-09-28 19:35:09 UTC)Calling this a "red" wine is insufficient: a fusion of plum and cherry would best describe the color, as well as the main fruit-forward flavor. Coats the mouth, almost dominating, well-structured tannins.
Almost too powerful at room temperature, make sure to bring it down to around 65. Pair with strong meats, grilled preferably. At 10 dollars, it should be a house staple. Highly recommended.
2008 Wölffer Rosé
(2009-09-28 18:42:53 UTC)Straaaaaaawberries. Really. Kiwi and gooseberries as well: the mouth feel is refreshing and invigorating. Pale salmon hue, with a light alcohol content of 11.5%--exactly where a rose should be.
Flawless for summer, on any warm day and literally with any food imaginable. Perfectly dry with on-point minerality. At 15 dollars, it's worth every penny: on sale or at case values closer to 10, it's a ridiculous steal.
Easily the best rosé of New York.
2005 Bodegas Zabrin Garnacha De Fuego Old Vines
(2007-03-20 08:31:07 UTC)Indeed an awesome value for the money. Cherry and plum, with a distinct white pepper finish. As a new convert of white pepper, this wine is fantastic with any WP cooked meat. Easy-going, but far from boring. A perfect match for red-meat tapas or barbecues. Be warned, though: the alcohol content is 14.0%, so make sure to share the bottle at those barbeques.
2004 Paringa Sparkling Shiraz "Individual Vineyard"
(2006-10-04 06:26:17 UTC)A totally different sparkling experience: the heft and power of shiraz automatically lightened by the sparkling method, and yet not. Dark and juicy, tannic, with flavors of raspberry and blueberry, sweetness a secondary experience all the way through the finish.
NV Warwick Valley Black Dirt Red
(2006-09-22 07:02:37 UTC)I have a strong partiality to this wine, enjoying it immensely on my trip up to Niagara. Baco Noir, as a hybrid grape that can withstand New York's intense seasonal climate change. It's the color that draws you in first: an unbelievably powerful ruby red, as if was hit with sunlight.
Bone dry, with enough lightness and acidity to keep it distinct away from the vinifera grapes. But the fruit-forwardness is there, as well as hints of vanilla and earth. A grape varietal that is worth it's weight in variety. Go get some.
2004 Laurel Lake Merlot
(2006-09-22 06:54:56 UTC)"Rich aromas and flavors of black pepper, cassis, vanilla and spice lead into a smooth ripe wine with succulent plum and berry flavors gliding through the finish." - Vintage NY.
This gets a four from me, because, the novice wine drinker I am, exemplifies a merlot more so then any of the others I have tasted. Merlot, the soft red, the plush red, the fruity red with spices dancing in the background. All this is perfectly excuted in this Laurel Lake Merlot, for a damn good price. Favorite red on the Island, no doubt about it.
NV Widmer Cream Sherry "Solaira"
(2006-09-22 06:43:11 UTC)"This one of a kind sherry was aged an average of 30 years in the Solera method. Extrememly complex, with rich, nutty and creamy textures and flavors. A serious experience not to be missed." - Vintage NY.
If I could add to that, I get intense maple and bourbon flavors, and a smooth creamy finish that lasts for hours. Seriously, you will go to bed with the flavor in your mouth. Highly reccommended when you have a sweet-tooth craving.
2004 Duck Walk Blueberry Port
(2006-09-22 06:36:32 UTC)Unique, delicious and not cloyingly sweet at all. Totally and perfectly paired with simple vanilla ice cream and plain pound cake. A delightful finish in the mouth.
