2007 La Mano Mencia Roble

The nose on this wine is swimming with rocky, gravely minerality. The red fruit aromas are mouthwateringly juicy with a slight herbal edge (thyme, perhaps). In the mouth it’s medium weight with blueberry, cherry and other red fruit flavors. The tannins are pretty firm and the first glass comes across as pretty austere. It smoothes out by the second glass and I’m enjoying it much more.

I really don't know how this got rated so highly. It's a just better than average mencia - a grape I like if done well. In the glass a deep red/purple. On the nose herbal notes, clove, briar, mulberry, red currant and incense. There is confusion on tongue. The mid palate is practically in a void. The spice, herbal notes and earthy nuances dominate and the choke cherry and red currant are minimal with an undercurrant of incense. The aftertaste is mostly tannic and acidic and spice. What happened to the fruit? Hard to match with food. Paul

The 2007 La Mano Roble is 100% Mencia from the increasingly prestigious DO of Bierzo. Deep crimson-colored, it delivers a fragrant perfume of earth notes, mulberry, and blueberry. Layered on the palate, it has extraordinary depth and concentration for its humble price. Spicy, smooth-textured, and pleasure-bent, this awesome value is worth buying by the case. Drink it over the next three years.
For the price, 14.00 canuc bucks it was ok. Jay scored it a 90.
