The majority of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, and Rofosco with a small amount of Syrah, Primitivo, Sangiovese, Merlot, Zinfandel, Dolcetto, Cabernet Franc and Petit Sirah only to be polished at the end with Grenache, Mouvedre, Petit Verdot and Malbec. "It's a firm wine--smooth beginning and tannic finish. A fun wine to drink (and it would be hilarious to take one to a blind tasting), but I don't know what food I'd match it with. Every sip tastes a little different, as you pick up different elements from the various grapes. No one grape stands out. It's non-vintage, but tasted pretty fresh. With all those tiny grapes like Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it could age well, but I wouldn't go to the trouble."

What a Weird Wine. Betcha never heard THAT descriptor in Winophile Class. But, Erik's the Red is just that - weird. BUT. Not bad. Actually, kinda...well, good. According to the label, the wine is made up of a bunch of grapes and brewed in a scientific manner like a 5th grader at a 6-fountain pop machine. A little of this, a little of that...I read a review that stated each sip is different and, by gum, it is. Forget all the "Plum notes...oakey...foretaste...lingering on the palette..." malarky. Erik's the Red is just plain unique. Is it worth the money? hmmm. Buy it under $10 and it'll be a hit. As for food, it's good with just about anything - a nod to the clever engineering of the wines makers. All in all, I recommend the bottle - an interesting conversation piece for honest wine drinkers and a great party wine.

I bought this because almost every Paso Robles wine I've ever tasted has been something special. Otherwise, the "Proprietary Red Wine" would probably have scared me off. The wine is all edge and no center. There are lots of different tastes, but none particularly compelling - and nothing ties it all together. There's something metallic going on, too, a blood-like tang like being punched in the mouth in grade school. Not horrible by any means, but not an experience I plan on repeating. For $7, it would probably be worth it.

I actually really liked this wine. It's what happens when the winemaker "just has fun" with the grapes. Clear/Red/Medium depth color. Medium intensity of oak, vanila, and blueberry. Off dry, firm taste of oak, vanilla, chocolate. 18 different varietals... wow.
