Roshambo 2002 Justice Syrah
(over 2 years ago)I really don’t understand why Syrah isn’t more popular. Syrah, and especially warm-climate syrah, is the easiest thing in the world to drink and pair with food, and yet, unlike similarly priced Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals, a 20 dollar bottle often has oodles of character. This wine : Perfume! Violets! Hints of bacon grease! Really vibrant, very Californian warm-climate syrah. Sure, it’s way out of balance by Rhone standards. But when wine is this yummy and guzzlable, who gives a shit about standards?

(about 1 year ago)This Syrah, tasted November 2006, still has lots of life left it, showing a dark purple color with moderate tannins. If this was ever a fruit bomb (not unlikely in a Dry Creek Syrah), that youth has faded. The wine now shows only a small amount of iodine and baked blueberry notes, replaced by flavors of grilled meat and a slight hint of tar. I suspect I would have liked this wine better a year ago, and I will like it again with some more maturity. Try it again in 2007. On a side note, Roshambo's Sonoma winery is simply one of the most trendy wineries going right now. With a youthful, edgy style and interesting single vineyard wines, I suspect this winery has a bright future ahead.

(about 1 year ago)I've to admit that I'm having a crush for Syrahs recently and this one is no exception, a nice surprise. The floral nose, compact body, and the smooth tannins make this wine a good companion for every meal. I'm still a naive connoisseur of Syrahs and don't know the real potential of these grapes but a warm 4 stars is more than welcome.

(about 1 year ago)I do not profess to be a wine connoisseur, let alone that of the Syrah varietal, by any stretch of the imagination. I chose this bottle because of the label and because it was something other than a Merlot. I read a review that there were hints of bacon grease (I am a vegetarian and do not know what that would taste like) but I would say the first sip was like butter! I know which wines I love and let me tell you that a Syrah was never one I thought I'd like. To me, a Syrah was some cheap house wine you'd order at an Italian joint (naive, I know but please forgive me). Anyhow, it is fabulous! For someone that has never tried a Syrah, I am sold and do hope there are more like this. As a creature of habit, I may continue to get this specific bottle unless there are other recommendations... Thanks for not hating those who do not know better.

(about 1 year ago)It has a over-ripened fruit characteristic, that I don't necessarily mind. The taste seems very boiled down, and as stated above, there were hints of bacon grease and butter. Went lovely with my meal, and it doesn't even really matter what it was that I was eating!
