Edgefield Poor Farm 2001 Fireside Sweet Dessert Wine

We'd been at Edgefield, tasting wines when my wife suggested we try their "Port style" wine. I agreed, being fairly certain I'd dislike it. We were pleasantly surprised to love this wine so much that we bought a case of it to send home. The nose has chocolate, a little bit of cinnamon and some vanilla overtones - turns out that's what I like in a dessert wine. The mouth feel is thick and syrupy, but not cloying. The taste includes an explosion of cherries wrapped in chocolate. There's a bit of pepper and a raisiny overtone throughout. This is a big wine, that goes great with rich chocolate desserts.
