Montebuena's 2004 vintage Rioja delivers a drier rioja than the juicy varieties I have had before. Lightly chewy and oaky, pair this red with grilled meats or marinated portabella mushrooms.

Estate Bottled Montebuena - Rioja (2004) - Bodegas Montebuena (Labastida, Spain)
13.5%/alc - $9.99
Cork: light fruit over deep dirt.
Pour: dark ruby colours dance upon light hued bubbles.
Smell: dry and dirty.
A more dry rioja than what I have had before, Montebuena presents a wine that does not erupt on your pallate but more seeps slowly down with mellowness as it rushes down your throat. Well balanced with the first presentation, as swallowing the liquid begins you taste the first change in the wine, showing off a tannin-infused chewier onset, while turning into a oaky departure as you breathe out. By the completion of your sip, this wine looks like a comparable Spanish red wine to the other reds, though no where as spicy as I personally like them. Montebuena would be great for grilled red meats, a lighter-but-dry fruity red wine that washes down easy.

(about 1 year ago)Parker gave this one 90 points, and at first I was skeptical. I mean, $8?? But I have to agree; this is a very good wine at a great price.
Montebuena Rioja (2004)
(about 1 year ago)Dry and slightly tannic rioja that didn't impress me at all. You can definitely perceive the attempt to straighten up the acidity but it is still present. Also shows a dirt and potent nose and a snappy acidity that will match pungent cheeses.

(about 1 year ago)Nice garnet color that looks nice with light behind it. The mid palate tastes like an unripened starfruit, green apple, plum tart.
Montebuena Rioja (2004)
(about 1 year ago)This wine needed some breathing to show its essence. Medium body, nice acidity, some tobacco and earthy notes surrounded by some red fruits. Hints of oak, not overwhelming. Good solid wine.

(about 1 year ago)Nice and fruity, but still maybe young tassting
Montebuena Rioja (2004)
(about 1 year ago)I am sure it had character hiding in there somewhere but it simply didn't 'grip' the palate. It did have a very pleasant velvety texture.
Montebuena Rioja (2004)
(12 months ago)Semi-sweet red with a fruity attack, but lacks much of a mid-palate and has almost no finish. Weak mouth feel.
