Penfolds 2004 Koonunga Hills Shiraz Cabernet
(about 1 year ago)Berry, fruit, earth, a hint of spice on the nose. Medium to full body, berry, tart berry, mint, pomegranate, earth, slight spice on the palate. Plenty of tannin. Long tart and tannic finish. Very enjoyable and really an overachiever for the price. This wine can be cellared given the tannin and would recommend it to round it out a bit - it will only get better. It is quite drinkable now, however, I suggest it be accompanied with a nice piece of beef. For those interested, Parker gives it a 91.

(about 1 year ago)Fruit bomb with some really well intigrated acidity and vanilla oak. Flavors are of blackberry and plum. The characteristics of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon both come through in equal measure. Very tasty for the price.

(about 1 year ago)I had this twice. One time it was allowed more time to air. The first exerience: You get a nose of berry, some vanilla, and nutmeg. The taste was as expected from the nose: ripe blackberry with some pepper. Tartness, acidity and tannins in balance. Unexpectedly well structured. Texture is wonderfully velvety. Very slight earth but mostly masked by oak-- however the oak is not overpowering. Overall a simple, but very pleasant wine. Age could really do this wine miracles by adding to it a layer of complexity. My second experience was similar, except I allowed the wine to breathe. The nose drastically had more tobacco, spice and earth. The taste was slightly more round and a bit meatier compared to my first experience. All-and-all except for the nose, a very similar experience to the first.

(about 1 year ago)This is one of the best wines, up to $20 range, that I have had in a long time. It has great legs and with just a little breathing provides great depth of flavors with a good finish.

(about 1 year ago)Oaky, smoky, strong berry fruit (black berry, currant) and some very mild hints of chocolate or coffee. Smooth, velvety texture. Medium-high tannins. Strong berry and pepper flavors that fade into a smoky, vanilla finish. Very good wine and a steal for the price. Goes well with beef, lamb, and BBQ.
