As opposed to many other areas in Tuscany, Cabernet and Merlot have been planted in Carmignano for almost two centuries. It is not a surprise then, that these varietals have been blended together to create Carmione, the house’s top tier red. A classic blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc and 40% Merlot, Carmione is a great example of the outstanding results that these varietals can achieve in the Carmignano area. The vineyards were planted in 1995 facing southwest, allowing for optimal ripening of the grapes. The careful, manual harvest in small containers ensures that only the healthiest grapes reach the soft press to gently extract the juice. After fermentation, the wine spends 18 months in 225 liter French barriques, then rests in bottle for six months before release.

2001 Carmione Pratesi
(about 1 year ago)Second time having this wine and it is a complete winner with food!!!! Drank one bottle without food and thought it was young and tight and I couldn't get to the fruit. Had this bottle with a steak a poivre, garlic potatoes and spinach and thought it was awesome. Highly recommended with a steak. One write-up on the wine says its a Cab/Merlot blend and Parker says its a sangiovese/merlot blend. There is sangiovese in this wine so i think the company write-up is incorrect. Heavy sangiovese nose with merlot spice, nice long finish of cherry and melon. Heavy tannins suggests will age very well and seems very young. Not overpowered by garlic and onions so eat with pasta and strong meats and cheeses.
