Pillar Box Red 2005
(about 1 year ago)FRUIT BOMB! Wow, this is great. Vibrant nose, dark cherry. Long, long finish. 89-GV 91-RP
Pillar Box Red 2005
(about 1 year ago)Yes, a fruit bomb. Dark cherry and strawberry flavors. Some plum on the very long finish. Lots of sediment. Very good for the price, but not spectacular.
Pillar Box Red 2005
(about 1 year ago)Very flavroful. Great table wine to keep around.
Pillar Box Red 2005
(about 1 year ago)Massive fruit bomb. Not in any way a food wine. Meant to be enjoyed for what it is, and that is waves and waves of fruit. Delicious, but not a 'deep' wine.

(about 1 year ago)Love! this! wine! I'd buy a case of it if I could find it again. It's the best table wine ever -- drinkable but not forgettable. It's the best kitchen (cooking) wine, too -- versatile, flavorful, affordable. Perhaps that sounds like faint praise but it's not.

(about 1 year ago)GREAT GREAT GREAT VALUE WINE! SPECTACULAR fruit bomb - impressive balance. Very one dimensional, but a great dimension. Intense red fruit, especially strawberry. Smooth on the palate. Simply fun drink! ...+ or - evals... Distinct varietal character: +, Integration: +, Expressiveness: +, Complexity: -, Connectedness: +

(about 1 year ago)You must decant this for at least an hour, two is better, three is best. Way too much heat and tannins when you pop it open, but afterwards it has the big delicious fruit, good structure, and nice mouth feel that I've heard about.

(about 1 year ago)Opened a bottle last night at a birthday party. Pretty much popped and poured. I could not believe the concentrated fruit aroma. The taste actually matched the fruit of the nose. I felt like I was drinking a Welch's Jelly Sandwich. Fruit held mid palate, and then dropped off to a quick but smooth finiah. I was super impressed with the QPR of the $8 gem. I really liked this wine. I will definitely put into my everyday wine rotation. Though, it may be too big and Fruity to drink all the time. I'll score it an 89 for pure enjoyment

(about 1 year ago)Incredible value. Deep purple, highly concentrated, fruity, balanced .. just as perfect as can be at 4 (or more) times its price. Being screw-top is a plus, and at 15% alcohol its dominating yet throughly enjoyable. I can't think of a wine I enjoyed more at any price. After all, how can you go wrong with such a great and well balanced combo of Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot .. especially when its done so expertly! To declare it an incredible value is an understatement. ENJOY!

(about 1 year ago)The nose is a plastic box of strawberries that hasn't been opened yet. Tastes like sour cherries with a little bit too much "sour" for me. Not a lot going on here, but good for the price.

(about 1 year ago)Red berrys on nose along w/ heat. Massive fruit bomb up front, pepper on mid, short cherry coke finish. Heat dissipated after time, and pepper came forward, fruit subsided a bit. I'd seek this out again.

(about 1 year ago)I would title this drinking experience, Dr. Chris Ringland or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Oak Bomb (confused? see here you cinematic landlubber).
I accidentally walked by the Pillar Box while it was aerating in my decanter of choice - a plastic juice pitcher - and almost got woozy just inhaling from 5 feet away. What a giant among wines!
Now I have to say that my first reaction was not great: there's a lot of oak on the nose, and the finish is pure oak with a serious tannin pucker that leaves you walking around the house with your cheeks sucked in like a fish. However, on the palate the Pillar Red is spectacular: like putting every Skittle flavor in your mouth at the sime time while gargling consecutive shots of fruit jam. Just like that, except it tastes great.
I was leaning towards an 88, since the woodchuck aspect was a bit off-putting and you can only keep the juice in your mouth for so long without dribbling onto your bib accidentally. Then I tried pairing this with some soft cheese, and shazam: I learned not to worry and to love the oak. I know that fruit bombs are not seen as food friendly, but with enough oak and tannin they can be. With a slab of brie, the tannins washed out of the finish like a wine stain on your favorite Vayniac wrist-band, and the huge molasses-like juices left over were allowed to frollic around my taste buds without feeling like I was suckin' on a tea bag at the same time.
Big 90 on this one, and word to the wise: pack your stinky cheese.
