The Blagueur is unapologetically French in 2004-very meaty, earthen and feral-but not without a nod to those who actually enjoy fruitfulness. More than any other red variety, syrah can vary dramatically between (1) starkly austere examples dominated by mineral tones one might serve with tarte flambée, and (2) flamboyantly opulent, rococo caricatures more appropriate for pop tarts. Here, syrah shows its swinger sensibilities, while giving a hint to its most favored nation. The familiar fruit flavors are present, yet the most noticeable tones evoke tobacco smoke, minerals and forest floor-a lot of Shaker with a good dose of Sheik Yerbouti.
