De Lozar 2004 Ribera Del Duero
(about 1 year ago)Lurking inside the creamy, smoky, savory aromas this wine offers is a dark, savory, smoky fruit core. Listen closely to this wine -- you will hear the slap of leather, the crackle of burning logs, and the shout of the caballero. Decanting might be a good idea -- not only is this wine unfiltered, it's a bit closed straight from the bottle. Let it sit for a moment. It's mild-mannered at first but it will open up. The mouth feel is textured, almost granular, and I like it. The tannins are surprisingly soft -- this is old, polished leather. A balanced, tasty wine. (2007, Austin TX, $14)

(about 1 year ago)Dark purple color, high extraction, young. Scents of blackberry, plumb, red cherry, licorice and spice box characteristics, very clean and complex nose. Flavor profile backed up by the nose: blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice, cinnamon. Small, but powerful tannins that smooth out and subside with air. Decanting recommended. Very nice texture, nice complexity, leave the bottle alone for one to two years to harmonize the wine. Overall very enjoyable, especially for the money.

(11 months ago)Beautiful creamy mouthfeel from the get go. This wine is surprisingly well-balanced, with an abundance of dark plum and cherry. Hints of tobacco and and a mild taste that conjours images of dusty leather saddles is apparent but subtle. The finish is surprisingly long with a touch of spice on the tongue. It is not overly tannic. For $10 (Winelibrary.com) this wine is simply amazing.
