Zarafa Pinotage 2005
(about 1 year ago)Yuck! This is the worst bottle of wine I've ever tried. Band-aide, burning tires, and rotten berry flavors and aromas. AVOID! It went down the drain.

(about 1 year ago)Tasted like a rubber raincoat and old shoes. Not pleasant.

(about 1 year ago)Plum, earth and bark on the nose. I personally find this interesting. Concentrated plum on the palate along with nice tannins make this enjoyable to me. Remember to trust your own palate.

(about 1 year ago)I agree with the band-aid taste. I continued to try and drink this wine in various ways in hopes for a better outcome...room temperatue, slightly chilled, very chilled...I really tried to give this wine the benefit of a doubt. Probably won't buy again....

(about 1 year ago)I'm guessing a couple previous reviewers got bad bottles, because I LOVE this wine! Then again, tastes can differ considerably. Spicy berry nose, a little peppery. There's another aroma I can't identify, but really like. Maybe it's the "bark" another reviewer mentioned. The taste is balanced, with some tannin & leather, even a slight hint of a round sort of sweetness. I enjoyed it first sip to last.

(about 1 year ago)We bought this bottle at trader joes. I too smelled the band-aid smell that other reviewers noted; however, I have read that the smell may be more typical of pinotage wines. Other tasting notes are pepper, smoke, and dark fruit. The lingering finish reminds me of a smoky dark chocolate. If the medicinal smell was reduced I think that it would be a much better wine.

(about 1 year ago)Nose: Band-Aids, with hints of black peppercorns and shoe polish. It has a smooth start with a sharp finish. Smoky, peppery flavor with a hint of blackberry in there. Definitely more smoke and spice than fruit happening. This is one of my favorite value wines at Trader Joe's - when I serve it, it always gets nods of appreciation. However, I have indeed picked up some bottles that can best be described as "spoiled", which I dumped. That, coupled with some of the other reviews here lead me to believe there may be some bad batches floating around. At $4, try a bottle first, if it is bad, at least you're not out a ton of money - and a reputable store will swap or refund.

(about 1 year ago)Spicy fruity band-aid nose then peppery strawberries with good tannins and a nice finish. I think this a pretty good wine and for $3.99 it's GREAT although the problems had by the other reviewers make me wonder about bottle variation.

(about 1 year ago)Took one sniff, one taste, dumped out glass, waited a long time, took another sniff, another taste, dumped out bottle. Dominant flavor was burning rubber, I didn't like it at all.

(about 1 year ago)I enjoyed this wine. It is a simple wine, but what do you want for the price? It's not nearly as bad as some of the reviewers have said, IMO. Spicy fruit notes, and - yes, a reviewer hit it right on - Band-Aid nose; I couldn't place that smell. Goes well with, say, a pepperoni pizza.

(about 1 year ago)First pinotage experience. Purchased at Trader Joe's. Full-bodied,high spirited, dense with berries and pepper. Long lasting on the tongue. Found the Band-aid descriptions amusing but wondering if others might describe that as "mineral".
Zarafa Pinotage 2005
(about 1 year ago)Not band-aid or rubber so much as scorched earth. i'd be willing to bet that the vineyard was planted over the site of a major fire and we're reaping the 'benefits'.
Zarafa Pinotage 2005
(about 1 year ago)Strange taste of something I tasted before but much lesser intensity. Kind of metalic, almost as if this wine was used to wash auto parts. To enjoy fine wines, I often drink some pretty cheap wines. But this one is undrinkable.
