Bonny Doon Madiran Heart of Darkness 2001
(about 1 year ago)This wine has a big feel. Very intense with loads of heat. Almost burns the senses at first taste. Once your palate adjusts, you get a nice tame offering of blackberry with a slight hint of dried rasins. Heart of Darkness is a french wine from the Appellation Mandiran Controlee offered by the Bonny Doon family. A jammy punch follows through in the mid-palate. Could possibly pair well with pate or cold cuts. Try with Guyere chesse or as an accompaniment to your favorite cheese fondue.

(about 1 year ago)This tastes like a Syrah or a Petit Syrah. Its very spicy and peppery on the nose. The first taste is very intese but mellows as it sits. The finish is jammy and pleasantly lingers. I think this would be good with barbeque chicken or pork.

(about 1 year ago)A big wine, but i'm not a real madiran drinker. the tannat is always too powerful.

(about 1 year ago)This wine will be better in a few years, despite being 6 years old the tannins still need time to age.
Bonny Doon Madiran Heart of Darkness 2001
(6 months ago)Good madiran is frustratingly hard to find in the states, so it was a boon when Bonny Doon not only put one into wide distribution but also made it a great example of the style. That said, this wine specifically - and madiran in general - is not for everyone. It's big, but in an "old world" sort of way. There's a big nose, but it brings a lot of earth as well as dark fruit. This wine has less tannin than many madirans, but it's still there up front. One nice consequence is a nice, chewy mouthfeel. True, this is a wine that smacks you across the face and leaves a stinging welt that lingers... but in a good way. The finish is rich, complex and long. It makes you think. If you want a fruity bombshell starlet, look to Australia. But if you prefer the brooding character actor with a complex interior life, grab this.
