On the nose: smoky, onion, red pepper, green pepper. On the palate: very tannic, bitter, very little fruit, dies quickly.

For $12, this is a very cerebral wine. Light, perfume-y nose: lemon and herbs, maybe vanilla. Hits the tip of the tongue with an odd little tingle, and something minty and herbacious going on. The mint/herb profile shifts into a moss flavor on the mid-palate; everything softens out; finishes very rustic and woodsy--sawdust, hay, peat. Not the smoothness I expect from a carmenere, but I really like the character this one shows; rustic and rough around the edges wins my heart. No, the structure is not perfect, but it's very drinkable and by no means a dumbed-down wine. Not for everyone, but I can easily see myself coming back to this one.

A unique wine, herby and barnyardy. I got a hit of that sulpheric quality that is more common in Oregon Pinots. There is not much fruit in this one until the bottle opens up after a half hour--then it is bright tart cherries. Instead of being fruit forward it is mineral forward--earthy. In the mouth the wine is very intense and concentrated with a long smoky finish. It seemed to be a little hot both in the nose and the palate (high alcohol content--even though the bottle says 13.5%) If looking for something different from the norm--give it a shot--worth the 12$.
