Pillar Box red is an opaque red/black color with a scarlet rim. It displays aromas of sweet, ripe red berries underpinned cinnamon spice and dark chocolate. The palate is rich and fleshy with vibrant raspberry & blackcurrant fruit intertwined with a citrus like cedary oak complexity. The tannins are full yet soft and supple, combined with the gentle acidity to produce a lingering harmonious finish. 53% Shiraz/37% Cab/10% Merlot Named after the proprietor of the 19th century mail coach service which once ran through their property, the Longbottom family has created a new family tradition of winemaking with such Henrys Drive, Parson's Flat and now Pillar Box Red. An INCREDIBLE value wine made by Chris Ringland. (US Importer)

(about 1 year ago)This is an awesome table wine! Lots of black fruit with a hint of licorice on the nose. Balanced, with a good mouthfeel. Tastes as good as some wines that are twice the price. Will buy again, happily.

(about 1 year ago)mmm mmm mmm Pillar Box Red 53% Shiraz/37% Cab/10% Merlot of pure goodness. I had this with a great group of people that I work with and it made it that much better. This wine was very soft on the mouth feel. I have to describe it as “bright” with lush red fruit. The best thing about it was the residual mouth feel, it coated the teeth so much they felt smooth. Also for 10.99 a bottle…you should be buying this by the truck load!

(about 1 year ago)this one is not a "fruit flash-bang" like the razor's edge i recently tried. this one leaves some great flavours on your mouth. some good red fruit. not as thought provoking as some of the more expensive bottles, but truely delicious. its the differece between reading poetry and staring and a neon sign that says "delicious". one will make you think about poetic elements and the other will make you think, "mmm... delicious." and i'm okay staring at the delicious sign for a while.

(about 1 year ago)Great color. An intriguing nose but the alcohol really comes through as well. Definitely new world and quite over the top. I got tired of it before I finished the first glass. Still it has some complex black fruit flavors going for it, so I can't knock it too hard. Tannins evident on the finish but they are completely overwhelmed by fruit and alcohol. Not a poorly made wine, but too much for my poor little palate.

(about 1 year ago)Rich dark fruit on the nose, chewy cherries and pleasing tannins in the mid-palate, and a soft, friendly finish. Not a complex wine, but a satisifying one -- a once-a-week wine. The 2006 is certainly comparable to the last two vintages in fullness and flavor.

(about 1 year ago)Dark fruits; smells sweet, but is surprisingly dry for how sweet it smells. I really enjoyed it, and with pizza! I decantered the wine for about 3 hours or so, but I'm not sure that was necessary with such a young wine.

(8 months ago)The 2005 was much better, a 91. The 2006 is not nearly as good. I purchased all the 2005 I could find because at $9 it's a steal. But, the 2006 is just okay, and really only worth about $9. It's an okay wine, I did give it 88, it's just no where near a 91 point wine in 2006.

(7 months ago)Initial taste wasn't too complex, some dark fruit, a spicy kick from the mid-palate to the finish. Hot alcohol on the finish. A little residual sugar. Unfortunately this wine was not given the time to decant. I believe more fruit would have come through and the heat would have diminished with proper air time... it does have 15% alcohol by volume. I think this would be an excellent wine to have with food. A good amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I would be interested in trying this again. Definitely decanting next time.

(4 months ago)Red currants dominate with a slight green vegetable component aroma. Medium body with a bright acidity. The flavors are not as complex as the nose. The wine coats the entire palate and lasts and lasts, unusual for a wine in this price category. Certainly would rank high as an everyday wine. Begs to be drunk wine food.
