Sagelands 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
(about 1 year ago)Not very full bodied. Starts ok, but no finish. Has a little bit of a copper tone.

(about 1 year ago)This was a smooth cab without any really notable qualities or particularly negative characteristics - this makes a great table wine to keep around, especially considering the price when picking up a few bottles on sale.

For $13 you can buy bad luck, half of a good meal, one of several dozen over-oaked Cabernets, or this lovely bottle of Washington ecstasy. This is close to the best Cab I've ever had at this price point - a price point that puts it up against Coppola, Estancia, Ravenswood - maybe the best. It uses all of the Bordeaux grapes at 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, giving it a great spicy kick and an enduring finish. The nose - particularly after it's been in the bottle for almost 5 years - can grab you from across the room.
It's all plums and with soft oak and tannins that don't bury the fruit. The wine is actually very light for a Cab, and has an interesting golden brown color that I'm 90% certain isn't a reflection from my hardwood floor.
I give it a 90 plus - maybe a 91 - with a tip of the hat to the great and overcast Northwest.

(11 months ago)Nose of dark fruit, oak, and black olives. Plums, olives, and more oak on the pallet. There were no significant tannins and very thin on the mouthfeel and flavors. Short finish. I was very disapointed. MUCH better the second day.

(10 months ago)early on, oak on the nose, tasting has a weak, almost watery start with an oak finish. the oak is not necessarily overpowering, but there is nothing else there.
After decanting 1hr, the oak on the nose and tongue became more pronounced; a hint of green pepper shows up on the nose but not the tongue, maybe a hint of apple on the tongue.
Extra-sharp cheddar really helps this wine, both in the beginning and the end. I'm not sure I could make it through this bottle without food.
I'm not a big cab sauv fan, so I may be biased a bit. And maybe I drank this a tad too early, dunno. If I were at the outlaws, or at a large family gathering and my choice was this, Bud Light or anything by Yellow Tail, I'd choose this; but don't expect me to roll up with this. I'd buy this again if I found it in the $2 cart.
