2001 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Domaine de la Solitude
(over 2 years ago)It took me a little while to get used to the wine itself, and I started enjoying the flavor quite a bit more as it was able to breathe. It had a very strong cheese nose and an almost overpowering nutty flavor on the middle and back of the tongue that masked other flavors to become apparent later. This is definitely a wine you want to let breathe. The nuttiness of it mellowed out as the wine did so and revealed more subtle hints of berry and chocolate. The nutty flavor was still very strong, however, and didn’t really seem to work in it’s favor, at least from my perspective. The wine seemed well balanced at this point and the medium-body would make it go well with cheese and red meats - especially more subtle red meats - without overpowering those flavors. An enjoyable wine, but not especially suited to my tastes.
