Wine Spectator 88: Wonderful aromas of berries, tobacco and smoky wood. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a medium, juicy finish. Best after 2004. "Like much of Saint-Emilion's limestone plateau, La Couspaude's soil has a thin layer of clay-limestone topsoil (from 40 to 80 centimetres deep) on a rocky base." (Winery) Vineyard is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

1999 Chateau Le Couspaude
(about 1 year ago)Color: Dark Plum The nose conveys a strong impression of pine forest underbrush with fresh pine needles, cherry and a wonderful suggestion of sea air. The body has notes of blackberry, spice, black cherry, plum, cassis, tobacco, and cedar over a wonderful multi dimensional minerality. There are very substantial, dry tannins. The long finish sees a return of the sea air along with bacon, cherry and mint. This is an old world meets new world wine: the nose and minerality say great Bordeaux while the fruit is positively new world in its extraction.
