Alamos 2006 Malbec
(about 1 year ago)I put the ubiquitous Alamos up against Bodega Norton in a $9 Malbec fight to the death, i.e. a fight to the empty bottle. Normally the winner from such fights to the empty bottle is... me, since I've just tossed back 1.5 liters, perhaps with some help from a friend.
Have you watched the new Rocky film yet, where a geriatric Stallone battles a chubby young heavyweight champion who can't act, but can drag on a fight for so long you can see Sylvester aging as it drags on? This was not one of those fights. The Ubiquitous Alamos took out Norton in the first round. It was humiliating, and I couldn't even get drunk to soften the blows since that would require drinking more of the Norton Malbec.
Here's what I've learned, and it's not much. When you see that really light color on a red, the cyclops stem of your glass peering back at you through a full inch of juice, and the smell of American oak starts wafting out: run for cover. Because you're either gonna get stinky juice drowning in oak, or nothing but wood chips.
The Bodega Norton was American oak, and not much else. Now this is not a terribly bad smell or taste, but to be honest I can't tell the difference between one over-oaked wine and another, and it completely buries the varietal: this could be Malbec, Cabernet, Merlot, paint thinner, whiskey - pick your poison. I like my wines same as I like my people: shallow and indistinguishable from one another. Err, I mean rich and generous with their endowments. Sratch that! Unique, expressive, and fun to be with. ;)
The Alamos was nothing extraordinary, but it was straight-up good juicy-juice, round fat fruit with nothing offensive. Probably not an 88. But after running into the Norton like a closed glass door, I rated BN 83 and Alamos twin-8s.

(about 1 year ago)Aromas of blackberry, cherry, and black pepper on the nose. Smooth, velvety feel on the palate, with black cherry and pepper flavors. Very nice.

Alamos 2006 Malbec
(about 1 year ago)Bouquet: Sour Cherry, Rasberry, Red Fruit sunk into a little alcohol. A nice nose. Nothing overwhelming but just a nice nose. Flavor Profile: Sour cherry, a light coat of rasberry jam. Strong Tannins, finishes dry but not cotton mouth dry. Overall for 10 bucks a nice, key word being NICE red table wine. This a good wine just about anytime. It's QPR is fabulous, its structure is NICE. Well worth 87-89 points. A good solid bottle of red. Think a Peppermint Patty, always a good standby.

(about 1 year ago)I was wrong to rate this wine so low. After having it a second time I relized that regardless of the effect it had on me, it tastes really good for an 8 dollar wine. I learned that you can't blame a hang over on one wine in particular. Also, I felt fine after having 4 glasses this time. (My previous rating was a harsh 80). Has some burgundy-like cream and earthiness I didn't realize earlier.

(about 1 year ago)This wine smells like cheese, vanilla, and spice. The attack is smooth and fruity. This is followed by a dry mid palate and a sour finish. This wine isn't terribly complex or interesting compared to other Malbecs I've tried, but is pleasant and goes well with food.

(about 1 year ago)On the nose: sour cherry, sweaty sock, asphalt, wet dirt. The flavors were very earthy (like dirt and rainwater), but there was also some cherry and some dark chocolate which was very nice. The finish could have been better, and the alcohol slightly overpowered the fruit, but it was incredibly smooth and tasted delicious. It improved the longer it was decantored. I really enjoyed it! Nice complexity for a $10 bottle of wine (and I know it's cheaper in other places).

(11 months ago)View: Nice purple color. Nose: cherry and a little oak. Palate: cherry with nice tannins and a little alcohol. Some nice acidity too. Medium body.

(10 months ago)Decent, but unremarkable table wine. Would pair well with sour foods, or BBQ sauced foods. Well worth the $10 price tag.

(10 months ago)Can't remember the specifics, but a total buy for the price.

(9 months ago)I might as well be eating chocolate covered cherries. It's really good.

(8 months ago)A slightly floral nose with distinct overtones of grape and red licorice, this red starts juicy and finishes with a miniscule sweetness, like dark chocolate mixed with raspberries. Very smooth, not very tannic, extremely drinkable... somebody please make the pre-emptive call to AA!

(5 months ago)This is my 1st Argentinian malbec. Not knowing what to expect, I was blown away by the acidity. Sour cherries indeed. I like it, but I am not overly impressed. A decent drink. After a few more, I may come back to alter my review, but for now, I find this to be a very average wine for about $10.
