this was a nice wine, that delivered on the promise of an aromatic nose. plenty of cherries and raspberries both on the nose and on the palette. fairly high acidity and astringent tannins, however dispite this the wine is well balanced and has a smooth finish. my biggest problem here was the lack of complexity. the 'spice' was sorely lacking - maybe a hit here and there, but honestly this was all red fruit and not much else. the body was also fairly light - not sure where they're getting 'full bodied' from on the label. i'm sure this wine could last a while due to the acidity and tannin, however there's not a whole lot of fruit and spice to mature. this is an enjoyable, fairly simple wine. it's a pass for the price though.

This color is light (like Barbaresco, but leaning more towards grapefruit juice color). The bouquet is interesting. It's got cherries and a little bit of bubble gum. Add to that the slightest hint of orange peel and some green veggie that I can't quite put my finger (or nose) on. You have to really get your nose in there to catch the veggie; it's very, very subtle. On the palate, the first thing you notice is that this wine is light-bodied with almost no attack. There's a little more fruit--and vanilla--about 2/3 of the way back, but still very subdued. It's quite "feminine" for Nebbiolo--soft mouthfeel, very shy flavor. There's a definite elegance here, but I want more flavor with my Nebbiolo (or "Spanna," as they locally call them). I don't think age is going to bring out any stronger flavors. Therefore, for its price, I probably won't be going back to getting another of these wines, but I'm glad I got a chance to try it. It's one of the shyest wines I've come across, which is interesting. 87 pts. (01/08/08) UPDATE: After sitting in a cool fridge (corked) for one night, this wine has completely opened up and could now be mistaken for a straight-up Barbaresco. THIS WINE SIMPLY NEEDED (a lot of) TIME TO BREATHE! While it is still a medium-light bodied wine, the bouquet and the taste have really, really come into their own. One night of letting it sit turned this from a 87 point wine to a 91 point wine. I'll give it 89 as a final rating, but if you try this wine and aren't too fond of it, puh-leeeze let it sit and try it again the next day, especially if you are a fan of Nebbiolo-based Italian wines.

My new favorite Italian red wine for pasta dinner gatherings. Nice nose of fruit and slight floral and smoke aspects. Really fantastic mouth-feel, with ripe red fruit, hints of vanilla and raisin, well-rounded tannins, and a smooth finish. Well balanced and medium-bodied with controlled tannins (for a 100% Nebbiolo of this age) made it a crowd pleaser among all the dinner guests - including those who are typically tannin-shy. Enjoyed by itself, with antipasta and during an extended meal of pasta with red gravy and meats.

Bold, oaky flavor on the front; hints of cherry, soft on the palate. Long legs, clean finish.
