2001 Horton Vineyards Norton Red
(2006-09-13 10:31:56 UTC)Wow! I had this bottled "cellared" in less-than ideal conditions for several years and was almost afraid to open it but it did not disappoint. A full-bodied spicy red that could hold its own against a heavily seasoned dish, but did not overpower the baked spaghetti maranara I had it with.

In the 1980's Dennis Horton of Horton Winery discovered this grape growing in Missouri. He realized this was the Norton grape of Antebellum fame and was anxious to produce the wine in Virginia again. He took cuttings, graphed it onto rootstocks and after a few years produced the first Norton wine since prohibition.
