2004 D'Arenbwrg The Dead Arm Shiraz

Beautifully done Shiraz from NSW. Big, juicy, yet not over the top. I was very happy to find a fine grained tannin which kept the massive blueberry, eucalyptus, earth, and black cherry in check. I also tasted cedar and black pepper. This stuff has a lot left in it so if I had a few bottles, I'd actually age it for 5 years then see how good it became.

I was introduced to The Dead Arm by a friend who collects wine. It's a full-on Shiraz that still manages to maintain complexity while being a powerful, quintessential Shiraz. I got this for a steal in Melbourne Airport duty free, especially seeing as it's a) not easy to find and b) expensive in London, where I live. The 2004 is a great example of the Dead Arm, but not the best. The Dead Arm gets its power from vines attacked by a disease, disease, Eutypa Lata, or ‘Dead Arm’. It kills part of the vine, the Dead Arm, but what's left is incredible.
