Guigal 2001 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
(over 2 years ago)This is a stunning Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I've had this on several occasions, and have been impressed every time. It needs to be decanted for about an hour for its character to develop. It starts out with a bit of an acid finish, but once it opens up, the acidity completely disappears and is replaced by the smooothest finish you will taste. A medium-bodied wine, not to heavy or over-powering. Fruit is relatively muted compared to CA wines, but wine has great structure, with notes of earth and mushroom. Well worth purchasing.

(about 1 year ago)You only need one sip of this to be hooked. I absolutely adore this wine and I buy it every time I see it. Even though it's really full-bodied, it has a clean finish. But don't get me wrong, this is FAR from a wimpy red. It's got a really rich nose, and a nice intricate mix of mushroom, a touch of currant and mahogany

(9 months ago)Wonderful. "Nose like a Jew", says my wife. Juicy, florid flavors. A dark, brooding finish. Do give it a moment to open up.

(7 months ago)This really is a superb Chateaneuf that is at the same time complex and approachable. Bright cherry fruit along with garrigue and wet stones come through on the nose and palate. Modest, pleasant finish where everything remains focused. This is the first time I have had this wine, and by most accounts this is one to drink over the next couple years. While I would agree this wine is drinkable now, very firm, well integrated tannins suggest to me this wine has years ahead of it. If this were in my cellar, I would think about drinking it any time over the next ten years.
