2006 Pillar Box Red
(about 1 year ago)Lots of fruit, good amount of spice. First glass felt thin...better after some air and with pasta...spike really came out with food.

(about 1 year ago)Nice ruby red color; brick rim. I got a touch of smoke and herbs ( fresh mint + basil)on the nose, along with the fruit I'd expect (and enjoy) from Australia. On the palate, it's possibly the silkiest wine I've ever tried. Thick mid palate, long finish. I love this wine.

(about 1 year ago)Smokey nose; tastes juicy with a touch of smoke; spicy on the tongue with a thin finish; needs to breath to bring out the flavors; not as full bodied as I was hoping, but could go great with pastas or other light fare

(about 1 year ago)N BRIEF: A teeth-staining, palate-coating, spicy "fruit-bomb" that has a peculiar "savory" flavor profile that backs up a fruit-forward, pure nose. Not a flavor profile that really resonates with me. Tannins are too weak for my tastes. A well-made, super-flavorful, undeniably balanced, clean wine. Not aromatically complex. NOSE: Shiraz ("sulfur") and Cabernet ("chocolate-candied-cherry") tones come through, with black raspberry and a hint of synthetic apple. PALATE: Only faintly sweet. Just enough acidity that it doesn't grab attention, but frames the fruit well. Tannins are weak. This concentrated, mouth-coating wine attacks the palate with dark, savory, spicy, extracted fruit. The savory-bitter midpalate character carries through to the finish, jousting with the weak tannins long after the fruit has faded. Not viscous in the mouth, but intensely flavorful, weighty. ASPECT: Brilliant, deep purple-red. ~2mm of clear meniscus. Completely opaque ~1cm from the edge. COMPOSITION: Shiraz/Cab/Merlot (50/42/8). Alc 15%. WITH FOOD: Didn't do anything exciting with any of the thanksgiving fare. Doesn't go with trail mix. But... it goes incredibly with Twix when it's cold. I'm serious: Cold Pillar Box Red and Twix! - a match made in heaven! Incidentally, I hate Twix by itself. 11/27/07

(about 1 year ago)A ton of wine here for the money. Beautiful dark purple color...vibrant nose of dark cherries, spice, and licorice. Silky mouthfeel...one word here: BALANCE. 15% alcohol but it doesn't stand out at all...nice acidity and some mild balanced tannins. Dark and sour cherry medley, strawberries, cranberries. Long fruity and peppery finish. Well worth its price tag.

(11 months ago)When first opened it was very tight and uninteresting. Had a glass every night for a week and it really opened up. Smelled of chocolate and blueberries. Nice raspberry taste.

(11 months ago)Strong nose of sour cherries, strawberries, and a slight smokiness. Slightly tart on the mid palate and ever so slightly hot on the finish. Does have a slight artificial, Hi-C type grape juice component. Still, at such a low price point, it's not bad at all.

(11 months ago)This ia very delicious wine but that it all there is to it; no complexity, no subtle flavours, no nuance. It strikes one note but it strikes it extremely well. I wouldn't seek this out but I also wouldn't mind having some bottles for everyday quaffing.

(6 months ago)Dark ruby red in color, all dark fruit on the nose with a good amount of alcohol (15%). Not as much a fruit bomb on the palate as I had expected based on the nose, but it is fruit-forward. Quite silky and balanced, though not much in the way of structure.

(2 months ago)I do agree that this blend has very interesting savory characteristics, to the point of having hints of soy sauce, but that doesn't make it a good wine. It is a monolithic fruit bomb with a silky midpalate but with a very monodimensional flavor profile. Plus, it gives me a headache. It happened twice now, with the same wine: sulfites? Watch out.

(2 months ago)Fruit Bomb? You Bet. Hedonistic and easy drinking and not a bit sophisticated. Some are calling the mouthfeel on this one "silky"--I'd call it slick and viscous and syrupy. Up front flavors of candied apple and red licorice. Definitely red licorice. I don't dislike this wine. I might buy it again, because it's fun and packs a punch. But it's difficult to pair with food, thanks to the serious sugar residue. There was certainly some complexity here, but all the jammy-jelly-preserved fruitiness made it hard to pay attention to nuance.

(about 1 month ago)Pretty solid little wine. I can see new red wine drinkers hittin this up. Fruity and not too funky. Also velvety and with a gushy fruit filled midpalate.

(about 1 month ago)Initially, I would have rated this wine at a 94.0, but now that I've spent a fair bit of time with this wine, I find that the toasted marshmallow flavours are almost a little bit too overpowering, and also a bit too "filling" for my liking. The hot jam aromas will keep me coming back though, and so will the milk chocolate finish (delicate though it is). Beautiful colour, perfect body; a wonderful after-dinner wine that I will be picking up many more bottles of in the near future. Decant for 20-30 minutes at least before drinking.

(about 1 month ago)idea range for any wine... w/ a bit of light creamy chocolate in the mid range...

(about 1 month ago)Fruity spicy goodness! I am a big fan of this and it's a great wine for wine novices and snobs alike!
