Fife 2001 Meritage
(about 1 year ago) buddy icon barclay 90.0/100
First off, I should probably mention that I have a real sentimental soft-spot for Fife. I’ve had some wonderful times and meals with some of their redhead zins, so I may be a bit biased.
That said, I think this is another really nice wine from them. Up front, there’s some good blackberry and cherry fruit (not overly gooey, sugary or fake). Nice complexity and structure on the mid-palate, with lots of cocoa, and the slightest hint of green bell pepper. On the finish, there’s a good amount of tobacco, cedar box, and a fair (but not obnoxious) amount of oak. It’s too high in alcohol (14.8%), but it hides it pretty well, as the wine doesn’t come off as nearly that hot.
