Coltibuono 2004 Sangiovese 70% Syrah 30%

monkey arms and i think this is serious bang for the buck. unfortunately (or maybe not?) we are accustomed to drinking more expensive wine, so it's a real treat for us to find something in this price range that rocks. the wine drinks well right out of the bottle. and it opens up in no time at all. it's very much a dried fruit wine: dried cherry foremost. it's also a bit tobacco-y. monkey arms, the ever amazing palate, reminds me that tobacco in its true form is reminiscent of dried fruit anyway. so there you have it. 10 minutes in: the wine has opened nicely. the tobacco side is coming up, with some florals, and the dried fruit is hanging strong. i'm not the best at identifying which florals exactly, but it's a floral wine nonetheless. and kind of ivory soapy in a good way. it's opening very quickly which makes us think it'll die fast. good thing we'll be done in under an hour. tastes like very young vines. no harm there. it's refreshing in a city as hot as ours. here's monkey arms: So, i don't really like italian wines, but the 30 % syrah (a new world style, which is probably an obvious statement), must be what is bringing me to really dig this guy. It is sorta of a tenacious dog that'll be fun to play with for a short while, which is good because the little guy'll be dead asleep in... well i guess less than an hour?! Did I mention that she loves italian wines? So I was struck by the parallel. 70 % Italian (her) and 30% New World (me), and that's my most optimistic estimate. So in conclusion, I definitely think this is a real nice wine at a really nice price.
