Alamos Malbec 2006
(about 1 year ago)OMG....WOW!!! I am excited to a point that I am planning to purchase every bottle I can find. GV rated this one 88 points. I am rating this one a little higher. I would give it a couple more points but I'm having trouble with the nose. I will do my best to describe it: Nose - dark fruits and petroleum Color - Dark inky purple Palate - First impression is tannin, creamy, smooth. The finish is long and strong dark fruit and cherry. Very light oak. At this very moment I am enjoying a glass of Alamos Malbec with Spinach Lasagna and warm/fresh homemade bread. I can't imagine a better pairing. I'm buying more first thing in the morning. Side note: This bottle was opened at 55 degrees and left to warm for a couple of hours uncorked.

(about 1 year ago)Nose: Dark cherries + something odd. The smell of this wine makes my brain think "baking soda" (in addition to cherries). If you've ever tasted baking soda or cookies that were made with too much baking soda, then maybe you know what I'm talking about. Or maybe not, and my nose is just wired all funky. I'm sure that smell is coming from tannins, but I don't normally think "baking soda" when my nose meets something so tannic. And it's not even so much a bitter aspect I'm getting. It's more like a small mound of salted baking soda with dark (& maybe some dried) cherries in the middle. Odd.
Taste: My first sip was a little too bitter (tannin tantrum--I mean, baking soda!), so I let the bottle sit open for 4 hours before trying another glass. That second glass was much better: obvious dark sour cherries, chocolate, and tannins (less bitter baking soda this time around, more tannic grip), all blended with a little light cream. I greatly appreciate that this wine isn't overly sweet; the cherry flavors are authentic. It's also got minimal oak action: it's there, but it's subdued. It's a light creaminess instead of buttery gobs. Oh, and the finish is long and full of dark cherries.
This wine is my first foray into malbec and I'm not disappointed. That baking soda thing keeps me from rating it higher, but I do like it quite a bit. It's something I'll probably buy again.

(about 1 year ago)I get basil on the nose with some fruit, but lots of basil. Nice in the mouth, mostly sour cherries.

(about 1 year ago)another solid malbec, i've never been disappointed by alamos. lots of dark cherry flavours, not too oaky, and a nice, long finish. excellent quality for the price!

(9 months ago)Solid malbec, nice flavors of black licorice. Perhaps a little thin on the mid-pallet but nice dryness on the finish.

(4 months ago)Very good nose, full of fruit and some herbal thing. Leather, too. Dark in color, the palate is a real treat. Full of ripe fruit, dark berries, cherries, maybe some plums. Very smooth and drinkable, with almost no tannic edge, but it paired extremely well with a barbecue chicken salad full of tomatoes. Very smooth with a nice, lengthy finish. Hard to beat, particularly at the price.
