This second wine comes mainly from the château's young vines, and is made like its elder brother. Les Allées de Cantemerle has the same personality as the grand vin, but a shorter ageing potential. As it ages more quickly, Les Allées de Cantemerle is generally ready to be consumed within several years of the vintage. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc. "Second wine" classification. 10 yr vines, 9600 plants per hectare. 50/55 hl/ha yields. Total 16 months ageing: 12 months in French oak barrels (medium toast, 20% new) and 4 months in vats after blending.

Big cassis/currant nose, strong meat/game, slight old-world must and dust and some black licorice, vanilla, fresh corn husk and orange peel! Surprisingly light purple color. Can see my fingers through the glass. Palate has a slight vegetal component underneath the berries, plums and oak. Red/green bell peppers, slight mint/menthol. Weak interaction of the palate components. Flabby mid-palate fades quickly into short, weak finish. Weak tannins and acidity. Very polite and mild. Fairly uneventful. I could certainly find a better wine than this for half the price.
