91 points Robert Parker. "The 2005 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine, a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah, is a fabulous example of how high quality Cotes du Rhones can be. Made under the auspices of the brilliant oenologist Philippe Cambie, this wine comes from the estate’s oldest head-pruned vines of 60 to 90 years old. Dense ruby/purple with terrific black cherry and black currant fruit, full-bodied essence of Provencal fruit, herbs, incense, and spice, this essentially tastes more like a Vacqueyras than a Cotes du Rhone and is beautifully ripe, full-bodied, opulent, and also vibrant, which is in keeping with this top-notch vintage. Drink it over the next decade." (Wine Advocate # 169 Feb 2007) ... ALC 14.0% by vol.

2005 Côtes du Rhone Domaine de la Garrigue "Cuvee Romaine"
(about 1 year ago)My new idea is to buy affordable wines with good scores. This is to broaden my horizons a little and be able to do it at a cheap price. This wine is a steal! A medium bodied effort with dark cherry, vibrant pepper and some cassis on the nose. In the mouth it's a bit hot with cherry, spicy leather and a some licorice. Very balanced with a kind of a old world meets new world kind of way. I'll be buying another bottle in the not too distant future...

(about 1 year ago)The nose on this one is expressive with raspberries and black currant and a touch of spice. The pallet is interesting in that there are a lot of bitter dry herbs, some sour berry fruit, and nice acidity. However, the mouthfeel is way too light and the flavors way too thin for my tastes. The finish is not the shortest I've ever come accross but it's not long my any strech of the imagination. Given the hype, I'm disapointed.

(10 months ago)Really an amazing wine, for the price. I typically drink American reds, simply because I live in California and I don't understand French wine labels. At first, I thought this wine was closed or young, because it didn't present the typical fruit-forwardness I'm used to in most wines. However what I was tasting was the restraint and nice bitterness of herbs and vegetables. Tannins appear on the mid palate, and the fruit pops up in the finish. Drinking this wine all of a sudden made the terms and debates about old world vs new world wines clear to me. I was lucky to get a bottle on sale from Wine.com a few months ago, wish I bought a few more at that price!

(5 months ago)Aromas of dark fruit, spice and minerals with a hint of leather and horse blanket. Cherries and a continuation of the dark fruit on the palate with a vibrant finish.
