Koehler’s full-bodied 2005 Syrah possesses notes of road tar, spring flowers, blueberries, crushed rocks, and crème de cassis. With layers of flavor, and superb purity as well as depth, it represents a beautiful combination of Santa Ynez’s ripe, pure fruit and the structure and muscle of a great Hermitage from France’s Rhone Valley. I’ll be anxious to see how this cuvee evolves over the next decade or more.

An incredibly nice syrah. The nose has nice floral essences combined with dark fruit, brambles, and perhaps some earth. However, this wine really gets going in your mouth. The wine is quite thick and the mouthfeel is incredibly silky. On the palate, blueberry and raspberry dominate, followed by leather on the finish. Speaking of which, the wine goes down smoothly and the finish is amazingly long.
