Joel Gott 2003 Zinfandel
(over 2 years ago)Joel Gott makes fabulous zinfindel. And his first name, like mine, is Joel, so no surprise, right? This wine is Spicy, peppery, powerful. It could easily stand up side by side with any Ridge zin, yet it is very reasonably priced. In fact, Joel Gott Zinfandel has been called "the poor man's Turley" because it offers astonishing quality for a very reasonable price. If you can find it, buy it.
The following is quoted from SelectWinesLLC.com because they say it much better than I can:
"Joel Gott Zinfandel combines old-vines Zinfandel (97%) with Petite Sirah (3%) for additional spiciness and complexity. For this California Zin, he brought together old-vines grapes from top vineyards in Napa Valley, Lodi, Sonoma, and Amador counties. The wine is a deep ruby/purple in color with a vibrant nose of black raspberry, black cherry, plum, cola, tobacco and spicy oak. Medium/full in body, it is bright and assertive with soft tannins and bold flavors of black cherries, raspberries, plums, maple and spice. Aged 10 months in French and American oak barrels, 30% new. Well structured and complex, it offers beautiful balance and a long, smooth finish."

(about 1 year ago)the grapes are sourced from Napa, Amador, Lodi, and Sonoma. I popped and let breath for one+ hours Color : standard school night dark purple with very small hints of brown in the edges. Nose : red currant, hints of sweet sausage, wet twigs that you bend to try and break but only the bark splinters and then you smell it. and there's a small amount of black licorice on the second sniff. Taste : cedar smoked cherries. not at all bad in the mids for this price. meduim tannins. the oak is there as well in the middle to end. the heat is just one little nudge too much but not destroying it for me. i think this is a good monday night wine. i would pair this with a sausage pizza that has a smoked cheese element to it. cheers!
