Winemaking: Hand-harvested grapes were whole cluster pressed with a small amount of the Riesling (3%) fermented in a tight grained, lightly toasted French oak cask. Winery partner Armin Diel, who uses the same tanks at Schlossgut Diel, introduced the technique to give the wine added brightness without imparting wood character. The remaining grapes were fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to retain freshness and delicate aromas and flavors. Vineyards: : The 2006 Poet's Leap Riesling was sourced from an assortment of older vines in the Yakima Valley (71%) as well as Dionysus Vineyard (29%) north of the Tri-Cities. Dionysus is one of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the state, with vines planted in 1972 still bearing fruit. - Winery

This was an absolutely stellar wine. The nose has strong pear and melon components with a nice coating of honey. There is also a bit of a salty/mineral-like component to the nose. The mouthfeel is pretty thick, but it maintains pretty good crispness because of the wonderful acidity. The honey flavor component absolutely coats the mouth, and it is combined with the acidity and pure fruit components to make this wine really enjoyable. To top it all off, the finish is silky smooth. All components of the Poet's Leap are balanced amazingly well and make this a spectacular effort.

Clear, pale silver-gold appearance. Straightforward Riesling nose with honey, melon, and slate qualities. Good body. But the apricot-honey palate seems to be working somewhat in opposition to the acidity, and a bit of lingering minerality in the length disappoints slightly. Still, a nice drinkable Riesling.
