Sparkling Shiraz is still uncommon in the US, but Australians have been drinking them for the holidays for a while now. Ben and I discovered this wine while on vacaton in Sydney, where we used our normal m.o. to discover new wines -- pick something interesting and inexpensive off the winelist. Since it was the middle of spring, our waiter thought it was odd that we ordered a holiday wine, but boy are we glad we did.

The Peter Rumball is by far the best sparkling shiraz I've ever tasted -- and I've tried quite a few searching for something that would compare, since PR is hard to get in Texas. There does seem to be a distributor in Virginia, however, and you can find it online.

This sparkling wine has a lot more gravitas than a white or pink bubbly -- there are fewer bubbles and they rise languidly to the top of your flute instead of laughing and flirting their way up. The drama of the wine in the glass is balanced by the taste -- quite dry, fairly complex, definitely a shiraz. It's a great party wine, but not the best food pairing.

The only restaurant we've found this in (outside of Australia) is Bull Branch in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Sparkling Reds are definitely something worth the try and this one is grand!
