Selvapiana Bucerchiale Chianti Classico Riserva 2003
(5 months ago)Ouch! Between the alcohol and high acidity, the burning sensation was very unpleasant. My guess is that I should have let the wine breathe a bit before dinner, and I admit that as I write this (about 1 hour later) the wine tastes much better. Beginning to taste the fruit (mostly jam) and some smokiness. But still nothing great at this price point. I know this is a highly rated wine but I'm just not getting it.---------------------------------- 1 month later: Opened up the second bottle and had a much better experience. I decanted two hours prior and this seemed to help dramatically. The flavors I expected came through (blackberries, tobacco, even some chocolate which is strange) and the acidity worked well this time. Hard to believe this is the same wine.

(4 months ago)Nose: (I'm a little stuff) musty, cigarettes, a bit of turpentine and cherry. Very dry, acidic attack, a bit of heat, transitions surprisingly to softer fruit, with a bit of a sour cherry finish. Dryer than I like. Could use more time open (I decanted an hour before drinking). Next day, much softer. Very round and silky, medium body. Still too tannic for my taste. Some sips the fruit comes through nicely, others taste/feel harsh.

(4 months ago)I let it decant for several hours after reading these reviews. Pretty smooth. Got some hotness still, but not nearly as much as the other reviewer. Not my favorite Chianti, but pretty good. Paired well with antipasto of meats and cheeses.

(4 months ago)Definitely a wine to pair with food. Big, bold. I loved it. Definitely my favorite chianti.
