Cousino Macul 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Antiguas Reservas
(11 months ago)The nose is burnt rubber. I'm not kidding! Initially after decanting we detected something that might be described as sodden wood in strong sunlight, or light mushroom/undergrowth. About 30 minutes after decanting the burnt rubber smell was clear, with a faint sub-tone that seemed like green olives. There was fruit on the nose, but only a tiny bit. Then next morning, all fruit was gone, and burnt rubber and other chemical smells took over the nose. CAVEAT: I could not drink this wine. It smelled too bad, even if the palate was unoffending. However, the burnt rubber smell absolutely fascinated me, hence the 81 points. On the palate I found this wine too sweet. I've tasted worse, but this was definitely sugary. There's good acidity and decent tannins, with a medium body and some fruit on the midpalate. Without the sugar and the crazy chemical nose, this might be a quaffable wine, if simple and not mouth-filling.

(9 months ago)Fruity bouquet with a hint of something burnt (not quite sure what). The mouth feel was nice and full, but the flavor profile was fairly simple leaning heavily on the fruity side, but still with enough tanin bite to make it interesting. Definitely worth the 12 bucks, but not much more.

(8 months ago)This was a little strange. Opened it on Monday, it is was not good. It smelled a little earthy, sort of like moist earth underneath a rock in the woods. It also brought the alcohol heat and boat loads of oak. I let it sit over night and then let it sit open Tuesday night and all day Wednesday. Drank again Wednesday night...totally different wine. Started to integrate itself, the heat and oak took a back seat to some very nice berry/jammy action. I liked it quite a bit. $15+ might be a bit much, but maybe with a few hours of decanting these bottle could open up some more or a few years just chilling out. This wine has potential.
