Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2007
(9 months ago)Some nice fruit and a light gamey-ness with a minty aftertaste. Fresh, vibrant, and quite gulpable.

Come November, there's a run on this stuff like it was failing currency at the central bank. I walked into one of the largest wine stores in the Greater Boston area, expecting to find the usual marketing blitz of clashing primary-color Duboeuf posters and bottle displays. They were all sold out, with only two stray bottles standing next to the cash register. The gum-twisting teenager behind the desk said, "These must be popular - the staff are downstairs 'tasting' it right now."
Sadly, the first taste of '07 is... just... awful. The nose is okay, whiffs of cherry pop. But it's all down hill from there. You can barely taste it on the palate, and it's the nastiest, most bitter finish you'll ever find outside of a divorce court. Unlike white wines from the twilight zone, this one does not seem to improve with chilling, and you will rue the day you give this bottle some air. Dubeoeuf's greatest asset has to be curiosity, because lord knows why else I keep buying it.
73 points with a pucker.

(9 months ago)This is a fighting wine, initially, in the style of BN, overwhelming. There is a faint whiff of bananas. Tangy. Like a tiger on the prowl, it will grab your tongue if you let it. But let go, it won't.

(9 months ago)Tons of cherry in the nose - it's a scent I look forward to ever year about this time. Lively and fruity. A hint of banana, too. The taste is mostly light, tart cherry. At the moment it is providing fine accompaniment to a peppery marinara sauce & fish dish. It's a shame the price of Beaujolais Nouveau has risen so dramatically over the past few years, but I'll always pick up a few bottles regardless. Purists can scoff all they want - I love it!

(9 months ago)Young and vibrant rubi red color, translucent. Jazmin, candied cherry, cotton candy, nectarine on the nose. Shallow and hollow entry, evolving in mid-palate to a tart finish, with red and dark cherry flavors. Profile much improved in the presence of turkey with gravy and some stuffed mushrooms.

(8 months ago)Waste of money. Bitter, watery overpriced crap. I'd rather drink Charles Shaw.

(8 months ago)Trader Joe's was pushing it like candy after Halloween. Although it tastes like a watery cotton candy, there seems to be something redeeming about it, but I can't quite figure out what that is.

(7 months ago)Better than in years past. I would agree that there is a hysteria surrounding this wine. In France they laugh at the fact that we run out and purchase this wine like it is something special. It is all about marketing. Having said that, this vintage is much better than in years past and we will see much better BN in the years to come so don't write off this varietal or else you will be missing out.

(5 months ago)It makes me laugh a little when I think of doing tasting notes for Beaujolais Nouveau... this is wine for drinking, not thinking. Chill it down a bit, pour it in a tumbler and gulp away with some simple, rustic food... or just on it's own. But I thought I had to put in a good word for this wine. Duboeuf is a consistent and reliable Beaujolais producer, and the 2007 was no different... (By the way, if you have any left, drink up as it doesn't improve with age!!) I think that so many wine drinkers' palates are simply impressed with weight and richness, (read Aussie Shiraz or California Cab) that they do not know how to appreciate a rough, rustic, simple wine. When you drink Beaujolais Nouveau you have to leave your inner corkdork at the door and just accept this wine for what it is...
