From IzoWine.com- A product of the dusty soils of the Barossa Valley, the Pure Love Wines Estate Shiraz Series is the creation of Canadian born and Napa Valley based wine visionary Jayson Woodbridge. Layer Cake is an ode to Woodbridge’s grandfather who always told him that the “soil where wine is grown is like a Layer Cake, layered with mocha, chocolate, hints of spice and rich, always rich.” He’s brought to market a ‘wine of value’ with exceptional quality through hand crafting and cutting yields per acre by half if not more. Always the Maverick, it appears, once again, that Woodbridge has raised the bar by raising the standards for a wine priced under $20. To know the man means the price of the wine will never dictate his passion. Pure Love: Rich red soils are embedded with limestone and planted with very, very old vines. Exceptionally low yields contribute to consistently ripe fruit and a strong sense of place. Cool fermentation is employed to capture every ounce of the wine’s essence; both wild yeasts and French yeast strains were used in the fermentation process. A touch of French oak offered richness and tannins without overwhelming the heart of the wine. Unfiltered and unfined, the Pure Love Wines offer nothing short of purity of Barossa Shiraz in a package and price that everyone can afford.

Layer Cake Shiraz 2006
(11 months ago)Color: Dark, and I mean dark(purple) Aroma: Bacon and rasberry jam. Artificial. Overall: Cranberry and loads of numbing alcohol. Low quality and one dimensional. ETC....this is not a QPR at all. Don't believe the hype @ cellar tracker!

(11 months ago)Tooth staining fruit bomb, with a little spice. Pretty smooth for the most part, more of a gulper than a sipper. I likey.

(10 months ago)Dark and spicy. Pleanty of bold dark fuit. Chocolate on the finish and then something weird and the very end. High alcohol but tasty going down. Some may say "fake" but I like it so it works for me.

(10 months ago)Very smooth wine. Hints of chocolate and berries. No objections to this wine (save the screw cap). Very good effort.

(10 months ago)Big, black cherry, chocolate and mocha nose and palate! a really decadent shiraz.

(10 months ago)Brings to mind chocolate cake with raspberry jam. This wine really opens up with some time in the glass or a decanter. A great value, too.

(10 months ago)A big, hot wine that will take your head off. Definitely New World: aggressive artificial fruit that starts out like Kool-Aid, but if you give it some time in the glass, it will bloom and reveal surprising nuance. Very dark out of the bottle, with a deceptively weak nose; again, just give it some time and a few swirls to release vanilla, mint and that big jammy fruit. Smooth, reliable, and nothing too special about this one.

(10 months ago)This is one of my favorite Shiraz's. It is definitely a full bodied wine that needs to breathe for a while in the decanter. Once it opens up it is a delight. Silky mouthfeel, licorice, chocolate, berries, this one has it all. Pair with a hearty meal of pork or steak. I find tis one hard to find because it sells out so quickly.

(9 months ago)There is definitely alcohol in this. A little bit of chocolate and cherry smells, as well as blackberry and some subtle molasses. It does taste like molasses and alcohol. Pretty hot, maybe even too hot. 14.9%. An earthy, mushroomy finish. Good though. Something I'd drink again.

(4 months ago)FRUIT BOMB!!! If ever there was a wine that could/should be tagged "fruit bomb" this is it. Big bold nose jumps out of the glass and can be smelled in the next room. Extremely dense with a nice round finish. I picked up on blueberries. Overall though, I can't see myself buying this wine frequently in the future. The label is a bit of a caricature, and I think similar can be had for quite a bit less making this wine a relatively poor value.

(4 months ago)What a nose! Raspberries and chocolate...you can just feel the alcohol coming from the top of your glass. Fruit bomb. I was in love with the 2005 vintage, but I have to say the 2006 is wonderful as well. To me it tastes exactly like those Godiva dark chocolate and raspberry candy bars. Maybe that's why I love this wine so much? Yum.

(3 months ago)The appearance of this wine is a very dark purple. It is a full bodied wine with soft tannin but very hot. Its bouquet is of dark rasberries and has a pronounced chocolate nose - especially if one decanters it for a few hours. Its balance is too "hot" for me but it is fruity. Its actually a fairly complex wine but too much alcohol for balance.
