Here is an interesting Syrah from California's Central Coast. The 2005 Qupe Central Coast Syrah is made with 93% Syrah, 4% Grenache, 2% Mourvedre, and 1% Counoise, and is done in an old world fashion. This isn't one of the fruit bombs we have come to know and love from that region. Done in more of an old world fashion, the 2005 Qupe has some raspberry and pepper on the nose and nice tannins with cranberry and pepper with a meatiness that's old world. The finish leaves you wanting with a short somewhat hot finish although the alcohol is only at 13.5%, somewhat lower than the Syrah's we see from the Central Coast. At 17.99 a bottle, I rate this one 88 points. There are so many really good Syrah's for under 15 bucks with better profiles, that this 2005 Qupe is a pass.

2005 Qupe Central Coast Syrah
(3 months ago)Nothing extraordinary. I've enjoyed Qupe in the past, but this Syrah seemed like so many. I am not a big Syrah fan because they are often dark, ash, leather, and I'm enjoy a more fruity wine. There are some nice berry flavors in this wine, but the finish just doesn't do it any justice.
