Cardinal Zin 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel
(over 2 years ago)I really want to like this wine because all of my friends enjoy it (including one who led me onto the path of Zinfandel in the first place) ... but I think it suffers from a case of over-hype that leaves my taste buds a bit deflated. The price is right, but the overall composition loses me. I do like winemaker Randall Graham's decision to produce the wine with a conservative alcohol level (13.8%). It pairs well with food (especially pot roast, lamb, pulled pork) and it makes a respectable dinner choice that will satisfy your guests. But it wouldn't be my choice for corking to sip over idle conversation. Yet, I'm still so intrigued by its mystique I'm sure to cork a few more bottles in the future and give it another go.

(over 2 years ago)Similar to the above review, I picked up a bottle of this after some rave reviews from a friend. After uncorking it (er... un screwing it), it just didn't work for me. It seemed over done--trying to be brassy and bold in it's flavors, but ending up rather flat. I'll give it an "eh".

(over 2 years ago)Drinkable. I paired it with New York Strip with Hotel maitre de butter. It was drinkable, but for the price point of $18.00, I feel that there are better values out there. If you can find it on sale for $13 or less its worthwhile. Initially it was very sharp, but after it sat in my decanter, it became very soft and velvety. Strong noted of spice and currant. Great with food but I feel it lacks something to be a stand-alone vintage. Jaymes
