2005 J. Calvet Bordeaux Reserve de L'Estey Medoc
(11 months ago)The nose is sweet! I get some red fruit and maybe a little bit of steamed veggies. In the mouth the wine is light with tannins but not too many tannins. There's red fruit throughout the palate and a bitter finish. I really like this wine and it is a GREAT DEAL for only $7. Plus it's a Médoc AC 2005, which apparently was a great winemaking year. Good for college students and delightful! It doesn't taste good with salmon though, just be warned.

(7 months ago)Day 1. A little green. Sour cherry, wood, hint of vanilla, tar, and even mint on the nose. Not a fruit forward wine. Oaky, sour cherry, spicy kick in the mid palate firm tannins. Decent length on a dry finish. Not sure how I feel about this wine. I believe it has potential in the future. (Rating:82) Due to day 1 results, I decided to leave half the bottle to try a few days later. Day 4. Cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, hints of oak, vanilla, much more fruit on the nose. This is a pretty significant change on the palate as well. Ripe Strawberry & cherry fruit, with some raisins. Spicy kick is less significant with a nice transition to a long lasting finish... still dry but pleasant and again, not as significant. This wine aged very well. Great structure, held together like a champ. (Rating:86)

(7 months ago)This is a delightful Medoc with a fruity nose, mainly strawberry with a touch of vanilla, more of the same on the palate and a slight nutty edge. Firm but balanced tannins, light mouthfeel, and reasonably long finish. Pairs equally well with either Port Salut cheese or basil scallop linguine. Excellent wine.

(7 months ago)Purchased at Trader Joe's in Phoenix area. The nose presents an earthy blend of tannins, anise and mothballs. The initial taste is fruity - blackberry and cherry. There is a hint toward juiciness, but it fades into a sharper, drier finish. I'm not well-acquainted with the Médoc appellation, so this may be typical, and I don't mind it, though it was a surprise at first. Good price and a VERY good value for a drinkable Bordeaux.
