The other was one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon's I've tasted in 2007 and I'll be back for more in 2008! It was the 2003 Pepper Bridge Walla Walla Valley Washington Cabernet Sauvignon. This one required some decanting (Reese decanted both) and we drank it about 45 minutes into the meal. Prior to decanting the wine had some tannins and a bit of bitterness that needed to open with some aeration. This wine knocked my socks off!!!! Immediately, there was a black fruit and floral aroma. And the wine really delivers. Blackberry and Plum in a lush fruit explodes from the glass, the dark fruit is highlighted with some coffee, dark chocolate, and a little tar in a fruit driven long finish with just the right amount of oak and tannins. AT 13.9% alcohol, the 2003 is 95.5% Cabernet, with 2.3% Merlot, and 2.2% Malbec to complete the blend. 63.8% of the grapes for this wine were grown in the nearby Seven Hills Vineyard (we'll discuss the Seven Hills Wines in another blog) and 36.2% in the Pepper Bridge Vineyard. It comes as no surprise that The Wine Enthusiast gave this wine 91 points and Wine & Spirits gave it 94 points and named it among their top 100 wine of the year. Other accolades are equally impressive. For me, this was a 93 pointer and one of the top three wines I have tasted this year.
