"The brilliant 2005 Costera IGT is composed of 90% Cannonau (a local grape believed to be a derivative of Grenache), 5% Carignano, and 5% Bovale Sardo. This powerhouse red represents Sardinia’s version of Chateauneuf du Pape. It boasts sweet black cherry fruit interwoven with notes of pepper, Provencal herbs, spice box, and licorice. This full-bodied beauty possesses superb texture and depth. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. One of my favorite estates from Sardinia, Argiolas, located just north of Cagliari, has long promoted the island’s indigenous varietals, including Nuragus and Vermentino for their whites, and such red grapes as Cannonau, Monica, Carignano, and Bovale Sardo. I strongly urge readers to check out these fabulous wine values as they are every bit as good as these enthusiastic notes suggest. Just one caveat: Drink the whites within a year of release, and the reds within several." (WA) Business Week - January 8, 2007 - 91 points - Cuvées That Make The Most Of Comfort Food "This powerhouse red represents Sardinia's version of Châteauneuf du Pape. It is composed of 90% cannonau (a local grape believed to be a derivative of grenache) and 5% each of carignano and bovale sardo. It boasts sweet black cherry interwoven with notes of pepper, Provençal herbs, spice box, and licorice as well as superb texture and depth." Winery Notes Made from 90% Cannonau, 5% Carignano and 5% Bovale Sardo grown in the Costera vineyard. In order to achieve greater color extraction and flavor concentration, the juice is macerated with the skins for 12-15 days, with soft but frequent pump-overs. The wine is aged in French barriques for six to eight months prior to bottling. Tasting Notes The intense, ruby red color of this wine tends toward orange with age. The full bouquet of sweet black cherry, pepper, and licorice is typical of the Cannonau grape. Warm and full bodied on the palate with excellent texture, ripe fruit flavors and pleasant tannins, Costera is an excellent food wine that is best enjoyed with roast beef with herbs, filet mignon, stews and sharp cheeses.

A wonderfully balanced red from Sardinia. Medium bodied with fantastic acidity and soothing tannins. Cherries and raspberries play with garrigue for a real pleaser. This is my "house wine". It goes with about everything and is firing on all cylinders right now. Buy up before the vintage changes (though it will probably drink great as well).
