Charles Shaw 2007 Shiraz
(2 months ago)CS is such weird wine - one bottle is good, another is wretched, another is ok, another is amazing...whatever. THIS bottle is OK. O.K. As in, "$3 Drinkable." Bouquet is flat, but that's alright - Shiraz's don't usually make the nose go "Yum!" But I do detect a bit of "shoe." Nice shoe - like, Florsheims. New, good, solid shoe. Dang. First notes are bright and sparkly, like a Chianti, but then the secondary notes of WHITE WINE come out, followed by those typically white-wine flats that kinda settle in the nose...you know. ..this tastes like a boxed White Wine with tannins. Oh well. Finish is pretty good - full, like a Shiraz should. All in all, I'd say this is picnic wine. The people who dis Charles Shaw as plonk are snobs who, if there ever is a Nuclear Winter or some other catastrophe, will wither away like the unrealistic weenies they are - if you're on a budget, have to buy a case of wine for the company Hot Dog roast, CS 2007 Shiraz will be just fine. However, if you're picking a wine to go with a great Fillet and best friends, CS 2007 Shiraz will get you a little grief and no one will ask to refill their glass. But they'll finish the glass nonetheless and give you those knowing looks of, "Dude...why'd you get get THIS?!"

(6 days ago)Decent amount of fruit in the nose, with tannin and a hint of anise & pepper; maybe a little wood. Plenty of fruit & tannin in the taste, which is nicely balanced overall. It took some breathing time, but it's better than a couple previous years I can remember. Certainly worth the price!
