There are three classifications of Rioja, with Gran Reserva being the highest and rarest. These are typically aged for two years in the barrel and three in the bottle. I've been drinking the other, cheaper classifications of Rioja over the years and been perfectly happy. That is, until I paired this much more refined and complex red with some Italian sausage, broccoli, red peppers, and pasta with fresh parmagiano reggiano.

This wine had a very distinct and unique taste, for which I can't quite find the proper comparison While I couldn't place specific flavor comparisons, the wine did have a very long finish. It wasn't a bad wine, but not my personal favorite
